Help 8 meg camera, 3 meg file size

what's up with this? I expected to have decent pics, but this is no better than my 8 yr old budget 3.1 meg kodak?
both have 3 meg file sizes?

I don't think an 8 mp camera is necessarily supposed to give you an 8mb file size. My 12mp dSLR, when shooting in jpg gives me file sizes far less than 12mp. The RAW format, however, is close to 12mp.

The meg in a picture is the number of pixels. The meg in a file size is the number of bytes.. Not the same thing. The jpeg format condenses the file size as well.

It's a "cell phone camera ".
There are any number of apps that can take a so-so pic, and turn it into something special.

thanks. I usually do my editing on my laptop, unless there is a program that does something i cannot do with common mac programs. I was mostly concerned with the camera itself.

For me, this camera is better than most cell cameras, but still just a "on-the-fly" type. The colors are a bit rich, but otherwise, decent.
As for the pixels, they're really only meaningful when you're planning to enlarge a picture. Even with a hand held camera, a 5mp camera is good enough for most shots you plan to take. At least, to me.

Good Luck.

It's mainly about the quality of the "glass" and sensor, not the amount of megapixels. Megapixels are only important if you're printing very large, or you need to crop into a small area.

I'd much rather have a low mp camera with excellent glass and sensor than a high mp camera with plastic lens and cheap sensor.
