Root 8gb or 4gb?

Online this phone says it has 8gb of internal storage, but only 4gb of it is usable out of the box. Anyone care to explain?

Thank you

Every phone does that..

They start out with (x) gbs Of total memory. . Memory has to be reserved for the operating system , system function, and various other functions, so they subtract that from (x). Then factor in the bloatware every phone manufacturer and carrier add, also subtracted from (x). When all of the dust settles, you are left with "User Available Space".

And that's how a cellphone is born. lol

Either that or in some cases, a phone manufacturer will make a few versions of each model. Some will boast a better camera, some a different os with special tweaks, and some may even have a model with superior internal storage to the base model.

Usually these differences are spread out through each county version of the phone.

I believe that on this phone, since the internal user storage is emulated, they just made it 4GB and left the rest to the system. Hopefully down the road someone will find a way to adjust the size of the emulated storage as I doubt the system actually needs 4GB.

Yeah I knew how the partitions work for the phones, and this is what I wanted to hear.

I was wondering why they only left the user with 4gb even though systems rarely need 4gb to themselves.

You would have to ask them. :p

I thought maybe there would be a obvious reason I was missing lol

If only it was that simple. Probably just to be sure there is room for updates and future bloat. Same deal on the Wii, they just gave half the internal space to the system, even though it only needed like half that.

They have to reserve space for expansion..

OTA updates all require space, so they reserve the space in advance so the device doesn't run out of system upgradeable space in the future. They most likely planned for the market life of the phones, which usually don't go far past 2 years on some phones. After that, they could care less if you run out of space, they would rather you buy a new one with more available space.
