Root 902... Bionic Boostrapper... revert to 886... lost data connection... failfailfail

I've been looking through forums for at least 5 hours trying to figure out an answer to my issue, but am sans luck. So if this question has arisen and there is an answer already I apologize for the re-thread. This is my first Droid and my lingo is not yet up to par and am still learning.

Brief hx... I just received a replacement Bionic b/c mine had a water encounter and resultant screen death. The replacement came with the 893 system. I have a mac. I tried initially running my old root (I think this is MotoRooter..... the script runs "sh run_to_root_your_droid3.sh"). This was a mess and would not successfully root the new phone. So I ran a factory reset, upgraded to 902, and ran the Motofail root. I ran Bionic Bootstrapper Bootstrap Recovery and then Reboot Recovery. I selected my most recent backup, which I ran last week. 30 minutes later it finished. When I restarted my phone... no data connection. My old system was 886 (I ran my most recent backup, as I could not upgrade to 902 and was planning on doing a factory reset this week). After doing the restore my system is now 886, it is still rooted, but as mentioned, no data connection. When I tried to run the system update check over wi-fi, it pulled the you are on the most recent version crap (same as with my recently deceased phone).

So, as of now I am doing a nandroid restore. Wiping it all, upgrading again to 902, using TB, and then manually doing the rest myself.

However, I am wondering if there is a different way to do this, so that I can use my previous backup? I hate 886 and just wish I could punch it in the face.

Thank you,

Stef

you can't use a backup from a different software version. The old software does not work with the updated radios. You have to redo everything from scratch and then create a new back up. If you use tibu to restore, just restore apps not the system info as it was saved from .886 software. Even some of the apps data might not restore right.

Thanks. That's pretty much what I figured. I'd probably have my data connection back by now if had I just spent the time redoing everything. This is a dumb question, but can I just run the factory reset to wipe it and then reupdate? Or do I need to do something else? I would rather not do something that could set my phone up for further disaster when I'm still learning the ropes. I'm embarrassingly an ex-iphone user. That device just kills brain cells.

So I totally did the hard reset and screwed up my phone. I tried for a day trying to fix it from my mac. Finally I gave up at turned on an ancient PC my sister still had. Man, how did we deal with that speed! Slow, but was able to get my phone back after running option 2 from dhacker29. Then I upgraded to 902 and reran the Motofail. Now just filling in the blanks.
