A better phone interface?

[mgrant]

Is it possible to download a better telephone interface for Android phones? I looked but haven't found any, perhaps I'm not looking for the right thing?

There are a bunch of things that drive me nuts about the phone interface on the HTC Desire. I'm constantly calling people I didn't mean to, especially when trying to add an unknown number to my address book.

I also have multiple times now rejected a call trying to answer it.

It's not that my fingers are large (they're not!) but they are larger than the little spaces on the screen.

Is the phone app itself something that can be changed or is that part of the OS?

If there is a way to download a new phone interface, which one is the best?

There is an app to make your phone do essentially anything you want. It just takes a little research. Launcher Pro is a great start. It is a dock/homescreen replacement that is very customizable. (long press is your friend). It takes a little research and trial and error, but you can get your phone to act however you want.

Also look into Zune Home for a complete revamp of the interface. It themes your phone to act similarly to the Microsoft Zune, which is a sexy and sleek device.

Also consider trying other keyboards, such as Swiftkey or Better Keyboard.

Launcher pro, zeam launcher, miui launcher, etc. There's even a Windows Vista style launcher. (It's ridiculous though, so don't bother looking for it)

I used to accidentally dial people all the time on my Hero, so I found Call Confirm:

Call Confirm - Android app on AppBrain

It adds an extra step to the dialling process, but was well worth the price of admission (free) for me

It took me a little while but I finally figured out that I needed to search for the term "Dialer" in the market and there's a ton of different telephone interfaces out there. I installed Dialer One which seems to be pretty decent.

Dialer One adds an extra step (configurable) to have to click through to a person's entry before clicking on their number to call them, so this solved my inadvertent call problems.
