A Brewing Problem

I have to say I've only had "pod coffee" a couple of times at different friends' houses. And other than it being very convenient (and nearly impossible to screw up) I didn't get the appeal, particularly once I saw the cost. And I've often thought that it's simply another example of our wasteful/disposable society.

It's just hard to imagine enough empty K-cups to encircle the planet more than ten times...and that's just from ONE YEAR'S SALES. Yeesh.

Anyway, food for thought I suppose.

Any K-cup fans? Does the waste thing bother you?

I've had them a few times, not a fan. It's just not a tasty cup of coffee. And the waste!
I know they make the kind that you can refill with real grinds, haven't tried that but I suppose it would be better-ish.
I like my fresh ground beans by the pot full. Haha. I can make a cup at a time and it doesn't take that long. It's just right and yummy.
Don't mess with my coffee!

I'm a huge coffee fan. Unfortunately, I'm also the only coffee drinker in my house.:( That means I either brew an entire pot and waste a bunch, or go with the K-cup. So I'm currently a k-cup person.

EM, nothing beats a good espresso. A real one. Not the powdered crap you get at most restaurants. And it needs to be consumed with a dark chocolate bite IMO. I knew of one place within 100 miles of me that made a good one, but they closed.:(

I prefer mine with the occasional twist (of lemon), and sometimes I'll chew on a bean or two.

For candy, every so often, a sugar cube. Touch a corner to the espresso, it'll wick it right up - when your fingers get wet, eat it. Candy. :)

I couldn't use K-Cups if I wanted to. I use a 20oz thermal mug. My coffeemaker insists that's 4 cups. Keurig doesn't come close. Takes 4-6 hours to drink.

The best coffee I ever had was a tiny, scalding hot variation of an espresso in Barcelona. It is served in a tiny cup and drank in one or two mouthfuls. It basically is a chaser to a huge bowl of flat white you dunk churros (straight, rather than round unsweetened doughnuts). This seemed to be breakfast for many Catalans while I was there in the 90s.

The best espresso you'll get anywhere is in Barcelona, period. That's where I developed my addiction. :D

It still was when I last visited in 2008. Every bar could fix me a good cafe solo, but a bacon roll was mission impossible. :(

I love Barcelona, what a fabulous city. I have also been to Madrid, Seville and Bilbao in Spain. I went to Madrid for only one reason for a couple of days during my trip to Seville (long train ride!) I wanted to see Picasso's "Gurnica" for real. Never has art had such a profound affect on me before or since. It literally made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. I'm no artist, or culture vulture but if you find a piece of art that "grabs" you when you see it in a book or on TV (or nowadays the net) go and see the real deal if you can. I promise you an experience that you'll remember for ever.

I digress, at home I (for I am the only coffee drinker in our house) have a De Longi filter coffee percolator and a coffee grinder to go with it. I buy dark roasted Aribica beans from a small delli not far from home. Grind then relatively fine and it makes fabulous coffee. Mind you, it is expensive.
