Help a challenge for the geeks

Hi Geeks

I am very hard of hearing and struggling to hear on the phone. I have tried to find a particular app but alas i cant find one.

Is anyone up for a challenge?

I am in the UK and I need an app that when i am on a call I can talk to the person as normal but when the other person speaks to comes up as text on my phone.

Is this at all possible and if so is anyone up for the challenge

thank you for taking the time to read this

I am so desperate and I think other deaf or hard of hearing people would take advantage of such an app.

Welcome to the forums! :)

I'm not sure if you have hearing aids or not, or to what degree your hearing loss is but...

Google has taken some small steps to create special Accessibility applications for situations such as this. (Settings -> Accessibility)
You can learn more here: Using Google products | Accessibility

If you haven't found it already there is a Hearing Aid Compatibility mode built into Android/HTC devices. It amplifies the sound slightly (Settings -> Call -> Hearing Aids).

The phone is also TTY compatible, and should work with a Tele-Type machine. To work with a cell phone there must be an adapter of some sort availible? (Settings -> Call -> TTY Mode)

You could also try an earphone or amplified in ear speaker of some sort using the headset jack (3.5mm).
Or if you have a 'T-Coil' Hearing aid, they make a wireless transmitter called a 'Loop set' that you wear around your neck that will pipe the audio from the headphone jack right into your hearing aid, wirelessly. (my Mother has one of these, it is really cool - made me wish I had hearing aids so I could listen to music all the time :D)

And lastly there are a few application solutions out there. But nothing as seamless as you have described, yet.

You could try:
Android Market | PurpleVRS

Android Market | Hamilton CapTel (by Ultratec)

If you were in the US and had a phone plan with Sprint you could take advantage of their CapTel service. Android Market | Sprint Wireless CapTel (By Ultratec and Android Market | Raketu) Check with your wireless carrier to see if they have a similar service or recommendation.

Side note: I read that this is one of the best video players for displaying saved video files with embedded captions:
Android Market | MoboPlayer
