A couple issues I can't fix

Hi,

I'm loving my S3 but have a few issues. When I first got the phone, if I got a message there would be a message icon at the top. If I got a whatsapp msg, it would be a whatsapp logo. Now though, I just have 1 icon, it's like a white arrow pointing to the left with a single black line in the middle (I can't post links/photos yet). Any ideas what this is?

Also, when I receive a standard text message, it doesn't make a sound. My screen just lights up. I've looked at the settings but I can't find anything for some reason. Ideas?
