A couple of questions about rooting phones

No fannying around, i'll get to the point.

I love my SGS2 and can't (as yet) see the benefit of upgrading, so i may buy another one in case this one breaks. It'd also allow me to have a 'tinker' with rooting it.

1. If i bought a network locked phone (Vodafone for example) would rooting it remove the network lock?

2. I also own a Nexus 7 and love the stock software it comes with. Could the SGS2 run stock Jellybean (and lime pie in future) or does it have to have a modded version?

1) Negative.

2) Only if there is a custom ROM built on stock JB. Typically you'll see CM and AOKP (as well as a few others) that are REALLY close to stock (ie. vanilla) android. You won't be able to run stock android on the SGS2 without rooting and installing a custom version (ROM).

Thanks.

Think what i'll do is buy the new S4 that runs stock when it comes out in July-ish and then use my current S2 (which is unlocked) for all things flash, roms and rooting.

Rooting wouldn't remove the network lock but by rooting it, you could then remove the lock using one of the various methods available.

Like kelmar suggests there are a variety of Roms that run cm10 etc which are vanilla style Roms, however they may have some issues, before flashing then it's worth reading the threads on them in the xda thread. It is relatively risk free rooting the s2, provide you read and re read what your about to do.
