Root A couple of questions

poswimol

Lurker
I'm getting the Samsung Galaxy Q (Gravity Smart) soon. I've looked around on teh internetz and found a lot of information on rooting and the benefits of it. But I'm still a bit confused about some root-related functionality of the Gravity Smart, and I just wanted to clear a couple of things up:

*I want to be able to back up my system using RomManager. Is that possible for this phone, or will attempting to do so mess things up?

Same goes for installing ROMs via RomManager (even though there is pretty much only one ROM anyways, but I just want to make sure), I shouldn't be doing that right?

Is there a list of built-in apps that can be uninstalled without screwing things up, or at least a list of apps that definitely shouldn't be uninstalled?

What exactly is the Clockwork Mod? I know it is somehow related to RomManager, but what exactly does it do?

As for having a good, well-performance ROM and having apps on the SD card -- Arthard's page on the deodexed ROM for the Galaxy Smart pretty much answers those questions (thank you for making it, I'm definitely going to install it:D).

Any help would be greatly appreciated!:)

Thanks,
Daniel

Clockworkmod is a custom recovery image, used to flash ROMS, themes, kernels etc on to your handset. Most Android devices have their own recovery image preinstalled by the manufacturer, but it's specific to that device and it's generally pretty limited to what you can flash with it. I'm actually surprised to see the stock recovery image on the Smart allows you to flash the ROM you guys have available!

To use ROM Manager, you need a custom recovery image and as far as I can see, there isn't one for the smart unfortunately (not at the moment anyway). So you won't be able to use it flash ROMs or take backups, sorry. :(

Edit - Also moved this post to the root suborum.

i kinda feel bad about the no recovery for this device issue. i would attempt to port one but with me being a tinkerer and not a developer, i'm sure to brick one or two phones in the process. with it being close to xmas funds are limited. hopefully someone will pick it up soon or maybe after the holidays i can try. i almost feel like sending koush my smart for a week to see if he would make a recovery for it.

it took ALOT of trial and error to get something to work with the stock recovery. i think i bricked 3 or 4 devices LOL to get what i have available now. it probably woulda been easier to just make the recovery first so that i coulda had a backup LOL

oh well, at least people have something to flash if they screw up their phone now, right?

should i post a completely original version also? just like out of box?

also, using the stock recovery, i could not force "extra" apps to install to the /data/app/ directory, i could successfully make the rom with them but the stock recovery would delete them after installation was complete prior to reboot. this was aggravating, i spent several days trying different things to conclude its because of the stock recovery.

just so everyone knows, it was my intention and i tried, LOL

I don't have the phone, but it sounds like you went through a fair bit of time and money to get so your efforts are very much appreciated!

If you can create a stock rom to be flashed in the recovery go for it, without the ability to make a nandroid backup, it would help those who may have a bad flash.

I would love to see a completely original rom for one of those just in case moments.

I would like to learn how to do roms myself. Arhtard, you should write a tutorial! :)

This list sounds like a good idea! :D

Well, what you can do is this:
First, freeze the app with Link2SD or with Titanium and use the phone for a couple of days o a week if you don't experiment any problems, is maybe able to be unistalled BUT before doing that, go first to Titanium and backup the app (just in case) then unistall and thats it if you experiment any problem just repair it with Titanium.

What is new about recovery in the Smart? ARHTARD please come back to this phoneeeee!!! :P We need you XD

I'm sorry I haven't been any help. With the economy the way it is I was laid off and took a job driving a truck cross country. All my info is in storage on my desktop. If I had to do it all again, I would shell root and use adb to remove the bloat, leave the system odexed to gain a lil more space, do a lil theming and push the files thru adb shell root. If my browsing is correct, no one has made a kernel or recovery yet. There really isn't any need to fully root this device unless you utilize link2sd, that's my opinion. You could download the rom and compare the /system/app folder to what's on your device and remove the bloat that I did in the rom. If you don't modify the settings menu you will have to keep drivesmart or u will/should get force closes when u use settings. I wish I could get back home to make a odex'd version for people. Maybe someone will soon.
Wishing u all the best.

Edit: the method srjvargas recommended is exactly what I would do if I didn't know what was safe to remove.
if you remove stuff that shouldn't have been removed, I believe there is, or was a link to system files here in the forums.
