Root A few questions...

I just bought my Epic a week ago. I am coming from the Hero.
My questions:

My Hero was rooted, I did NOT use a one click root. There seems to be some terminology being used in Epic forums that I'm not familiar with, and - am I understanding correctly that different methods of root restrict what ROMS you can use? I am used to being able to download any ROM I wanted and just flash it.

It seems rooting might be a little trickier with the epic..... Is one click root the way to go? Or is there another method that I would need for the flexibility to change ROMS easily?

One click is the way to go. And really the only differences are either rfs file system(stock and also only with cwm2.5) or ext4 file system(what stock will be later and is cwm 3.0). Almost all the new roms are ext4 and most of them are ec05 based. I recommend going with the ext4, saves you from having to do the inevitable, plus ext4 is an immediate performance boost as well as it is an more efficient system. Hope that helps ya some :-)

It's important also to note that EXT4 based ROMs will not work on RFS based file systems and vice versa.

Some ROMs will be set up to run both.

A few months ago, it was quite simple, and a few months from now, it will be quite simple. It still techincally is, but with two file systems running around, it's just a bit confusing, not really hard.

I know exactly what you mean, as I too was confused a bit at first. I've only gone with one ROM maker so far, ACS, and have been pretty happy so far. It was scary and such at first, but after taking proper precautions, and screwing a few things up, I was good to go.

My biggest suggestion...READ. Then read some more. I know there is a TON of information out there, but it's all quite useful, outside the flame wars.

Pay attention to that stuff, and I would copy a few posts you think are good down and put them into your own little text file, so you have a quick reference guide of your own so you don't have to try and go back and sift through literally 600+ pages of a thread.
