A few questions...

Hey, new to Android. Have a few questions that might fit better in other sections but I don't feel each warrants it's own thread, so I'll just put them all here if that's okay. In each case, solutions with as little rooting/rom flashing/any action that's fairly likely to brick the phone are preferable.

1. What's the easiest free way to make widgets (such as power control) have transparent backgrounds?

2. Is there any way to remove the labels from icons on the home screen?

3. Is there a way to tab widgets? Old WM6 HTC phones had an interface like this. Would be pretty handy and save screen real estate?

4. When you place folders on the home screen, is there a way to change the Icon of each one so you can tell them apart at a glance

5. Is it possible to remove apps that come pre-installed. For example, the network I put it on put two of it's own apps and a bebo app that I'll probably never use.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks.

Daniel

I think a different launcher will do this.

Not that I know of.

You would need to be rooted.

1. Use a free widget that supports transparent backgrounds. Widgetsoid does everything that powercontrol does, and has an option for making the widget transparent.

2.

3. You can have multiple screens. I havent had a WinMo phone, but from what I understand, that works the same way right? One tab shows a set of widgets, another shows another sets. One tab= 1 homescreen. Depending on your launcher, you can have 5 screens or 18.

4. I suggest using Folder Organizer app from market for onscreen folders. The icons of these are customizeable.

5. Usually not without root.

Kinda hard to explain, but basically instead of having say 7 different home screens, you would just have one, but there would be different tabs you could scroll through. Like you would have a tab for email, a tab for music, etc.

And wont there be no point in that If you have multiple homescreen? They'd be the same thing. Put music apps in one homescreen, and on another homescreen, it would just contain email apps and widget?

As for removing preinstalled apps, be sure to know what you are removing first. For instance, on a Samsung phone, removing TouchWiz (in favor of another launcher) would make the whole phone crash whatever you do. TouchWiz has a lot of dependencies and shouldnt be removed.

I agree, but it seems like the OP is just used to only having one screen.

Nah, I get multiple home screens. The advantage of tabbed widgets is that one part of the screen is static. E.g. You could switch from music to clock to email while your app shortcuts stay put. I realise you could achieve something similar by copying the part you want static across multiple home screens, just seems less efficient. Have it sorted out now anyway. Thanks.

Actually, if you use Go Launcher or other launchers that support docks, the dock would be static. For any homescreen, you have three to fourteen shortcuts on the dock (this is sidescrollable as well, depending on launcher) accessible on any homescreen.
