Root A few questions :)

So I am completely new to the rooting game and I have a few questions :)
1. How does me rooting my phone allow me to wifi tether?
2. Is there a way to get *cough* free *cough cough* apps afterward?
3 How can I make my phone faster, more powerful?

1. You can tether without rooting by adding the option to your contract. By rooting, you can use other apps to wirelessly tether.
2. There are tons of free apps already in the market. You won't see any different apps by rooting.
3.After rooting, you can overclock your phone. Don't go crazy overclocking though as overheating, battery drain and lag will eventually happen.

Rooting is really nothing more than gaining access to portions of your phone the manufacturers and providers assumed the end user didn't need to worry about. It's akin to administrative privileges in Windows.

Can I ask you to elaborate on #3? I have read around the forums and no one has given a clear answer.

I want to root my Droid X for three reasons: 1) I want to get rid of MotorBlur; 2) I want to access root only apps; 3) I want to make my phone quicker and lag more.

I understand 1 and 2 are solved by rooting. But #3 is the issue. People say, "you can overclock the device, makes it faster!" Yet, that's always followed by, "but don't overclock too much!"

Does rooting NOT speed up the phone? I want it to be more akin to the newer version Droids of my girlfriend's iPhone, where there isn't a 5-10 second lag before she opens the browser or twitter app. With my DX, I have some stupid lag and it drives me nuts.

Thanks in advance.

Rooting alone will not speed up the phone.

If you root you can choose from apps such as Android Overclock, QuickClock Advanced, or SetCPU. I would advise Quick Clock since it is the easiest and will find the best settings for your phone. If you overclock too high you run the risk of overheating ,horrible battery life. and potentially ruining your phone.

Since you are wanting to remove the motoblur i would suggest you find you a good rom to put on your phone. there is a sticky on the main page with all the roms for the different versions of android. as for overclocking, most of the roms from what i understand are either overclock/undervolted, which will remove lag and iimprove battery life. just click on wach rom and read up a little on it and decide on which is right for you. some are smoother than others and some have better battery then others. And some even have overclock capabilites built into the rom themselves. but personally i dont mess with overclocking for my phone runs fine when putting a rom on it, much better than stock so im happy!
