hi all

am thinking of using cloud/net docs so i can easily share them between different computers and my htc desire - ive had a look at google docs but it doesnt seem that hot :/ seems to mess up the formatting of my word doc

anyone tried this and had success ?

cheers

DropBox.
But SugarSync handles whole DVDs!

But you should consider anything you stick in the cloud as public as a postcard and take appropriate data security measures. Like keeping regular backups elsewhere, and encrypting sensitive files BEFORE you sync/upload them to the cloud. Don't ENcrypt or DEcrypt files when they are IN the cloud.

ok will check out drop box thanks

ok they aren't secure docs. just my course notes :-D

cheers

btw I hoping that I will actually have an account and they aren't just for all to see? :-\

right - just tx'd a file from laptop to DB - and can see it to load on my desire - but im not sure the phone can cope with word docs :/ or do i need a better doc viewer than stock one ?

mmm...tried a couple of the top rated free doc viewers but i cant room in enough to view text - they are screen shots in a word doc - the standard app can show the text ok - but cant cope with the doc size :( approx 3mb

Did you try DocsToGo or QuickOffice? I've used DTG Premium for a long time with good results. Not free, but sometimes you get what you pay for. Might be a free trial, can't remember.

hi thanks.
yes I tried DTG free but it doesn't let you zoom in on trial. so not sure if it will work for me

ahh found an app by the DTG devs but pro is much cheaper ;)
call office suite - seems very good - 30 free trial :)

question: when i keep looking at the same doc - is dropbox downloading it each time or is it cached on phone ?

ta

They are downloaded and cached for viewing or editing. So of course, the files must be re-uploaded to Dropbox for other machines to see changes. Think for a second. Dropbox is only remote storage. It's not like using Google Docs where the file not only resides on a remote server, but that server also actually runs the app dealing with said file. And even if your computer/phone could work locally with a file residing remotely, it would be slow going.

anyone know if i copy say a whole batch of docs in to my drop box folder - is it clever enough to only upload files that have changed - or does it upload all of them?
cheers
dan

hi
yes that is what I'm hoping.but you never know :-) it might only cope if I change an
existing file rather than copying in files from another dir

I've sent them an email ;-)

cheers
