A Little Help Please

At this very moment I'm still waiting for my previous/existing phone number from a different provider to be switched over to my newly purchased Evo 4G.

When the phone arrived I got it turned on and just started checking out all the bells and whistles loaded onto this smart phone.

I must have inadvertently tapped the twitter App because ever since then I've had a dialog box in the center of my view screen stating, "You are not signed in. Tap to start using twitter."

Like most of you folks, I'll never use the vast majority of the pre-loaded apps that come with these smart phones. In my case, this twitter application is one of the apps that will never get used. I got this cell phone to send and receive phone calls and to surf the internet on occasion.

My question is; regarding this dialog box in the center of my view screen. How do I remove it? There seems to be no "Cancel" option. Will I have to create an account for this twitter app just to get it the heck off my start up screen?

Thanks for your help.

Greetings El Presidente:

And thanks for the quick reply.

I pressed the "Back Button" when the little dialog box first appeared. It just never went away.

I tired powering-off thinking that maybe the twitter dialog box would disappear but it's still there. I'm not sure if I really did power it off or if I just put the phone to sleep temporarily. Either way I can't seem to get rid of the little twitter notice on my screen.

Being a total noob to android smart phones I'm not really sure what to do at this point. I thought about removing the battery for a while but, I figured one of you more experienced guys may be able to enlighten me.

I'd rather wait till my existing phone number gets switched over before trying anything else but, if there's an easy fix, that would be great.

If worse comes to worse, it's not going to kill me to create an account with the twitter app just to remove that little dialog box from my screen. Just cause I have an account doesn't oblige me to use it. It just seems like the long way around to get rid of the dialog box in question.

Hope you can help me.

Since this is a new phone I'm going to assume you are running ICS (Android 4.0) or higher. If you long-press the home button you should see thumbnails of the currently running apps. Swipe left/right until you get to the twitter logon screen and then swipe up to remove it. See if that doesn't get rid of it for you.

If Lunas solution doesn't sort you out, and you can navigate to it via the screen (it sounds like the dialogue box is in the way) try Settings -> Apps -> Twitter - Clear Cache and Data. There should also be an option there to disable the app which should remove it from your app drawer.

Greetins Lunatic:

This is a new phone. (4.0something)

I tried doing what you suggested; "Long-Press, Left-Right swipe." The left to right swipe seemed to wipe that particular icon right off the screen. The dialog box in question still appears on my home-view screen.

I also tried the method suggested by El Presidente. I got as far as the "Apps." It brought up a blank window with the text stating, " No apps."

I seem to recall during my initial navigating of this smartphone, I came across a window containing the "Clear Cache and Data" but I'll be darned if I can find it any more.

The little white dialog box with the statement, "You are not signed in. Tap to start using twitter" is still present.

In the mean time all I can do is wait till my phone number transfers over to this smartphone and hope I can finally get rid of that text box afterward.

If you think of anything else please let me know.

No apps is there probably because the default view for applications is downloaded apps. Since you haven't downloaded any yet, there wouldn't be any in the list. Twitter is a carrier supplied app and would be listed under "All". go to menu>settings>applications and you should see several tabs at the top of the screen.

Since you can also access the menus, if you co to menu>settings>Backup and reset (might be a little different on an HTC device. Mine is a Samsung) you can perform a factory reset, which will put you back to an "out-of-the-box" condition.

I can find no "Backup and Reset" tabs anywhere in the "settings" page. That's not to say that there isn't any similar tab somewhere on this new HTC Evo 4G smartphone; I just don't know where to find it.

Putting me back to a "Out of the box" condition was what I was hoping for.

I just tried calling the support department of my new provider but, it seems that I can no longer place any phone calls from my old cell phone either. So, I now have two cell phones that are basically useless for the time being; until my phone number swap is completed; I hope.

I'll have to go find a telephone I can use so I can contact my new provider. I'm getting the sense that this smartphone upgrade may turn out to be more of a nightmare than anything else; at least in the short term.

You know what's peculiar? I've scoured the instruction booklet in search of useful trouble shooting info. It seems to be written by experienced android users for experienced android users. We noobies are sort of left to fend for ourselves.

I'm glad I can come here and at least get some clue as to what I'm dealing with. Even with your experience and input I'm still struggling to get to the bottom of this.

Thanks for you input. If you think of anything else please let me know.

Try menu> settings> storage> factory data reset. In the future you will have better luck if you post in the forum for your phone. Welcome!

I broke down and drove over to a local BestBuy store this morning after making my last post.

One of their knowledgeable in-store smartphone geeks was able to help me out. She made it look so easy.

I'd be willing to bet that many of you guys could have done the same if you'd had my android in your hands rather than having to rely on my descriptions of the problem in inquired about in my initial post.

In the off-chance that some here didn't know how to solve this situation, here is all she did.

She put her finger on the problem dialog box for a fraction of a second. The box then turned a grayish color which allowed it to be swiped over to the garbage-can icon in the upper right corner of the screen.

While I was there I also asked if there was a tab that could be activated that would revert my smartphone back to its factory settings and where it could be found. She showed me where that tab was then advised me not to revert back to factory setting until my phone number had been swapped over successfully.

In the short time it took me to drive back home again I forgot exactly where that reset tab is located but, I vaguely remember it being right where the previous poster/bberryhill0 indicated.

I want to thank all you guys that took the time to post a reply of any kind. Even though the replies and input don't always give you the results you were hoping for, when you're a clueless new guy like myself, you can't imagine what a relief it is to know that there's somebody out there who is at least willing to try to help.

Many thanks to you all.

Twitter Widget?

I was referring to it by a whole bunch of other descriptions; none of which I can include here on this post without getting kicked off this helpful forum.

I'm just glad to have found a solution and in the process, learned a little more about my new smartphone.

I don't feel as much like a stupid guy with a smartphone as I have been feeling for the last couple of days.

Thanks again.

I don't care how intuitive the interface is, the first time you do something it's a learning process. You will undoubtedly come across plenty of jargon in the forums ... roms, root, flashing, widgets, launchers, etc. We all had to learn them at one point. If there's anything you don't understand, ask. Android Forums prides itself on being a helpful and friendly place and if anyone gets out of line I'll kick their a... *cough* ... um ... I mean I'd really be disappointed. ;)

Seriously, no question is too basic. If you'd be more comfortable, you can always send me, or any other staff member, a PM (private message) and we'll be happy to help you out.
