Why does it want full internet access and our location?

Does the paid version want both of those also?

As I understood the description in the Market, the differences between free and paid are

1) No ads on paid
2) More themes on paid
3) Calibration mode

Can you explain the difference(s) in the calibration mode?

Hi, I'm the designer of steam spirit level (I also dig into the code occasionally)!

Internet access is for displaying ads, but I don't recall that it need location access.
Are you sure of that ?

The difference with calibration mode is that it will be saved only for one use in free version.
But we decided to release the free version 1.4 with the same calibration feature than the premium version.

Also, stay tuned, as we will give free premium version during one day (and one day only) in the near future!

I checked the manifest and it actually list 3 permission:
vibrate, internet and location
internet and location are in fact needed for ads, which are different depending on your country/city...

I hope I answered your concern, and thanx for your interest by the way !

OK, so does only the free version ask for internet access and location?

You see what I'm getting at? A level doesn't need to access the internet except to serve ads -- so a user who wants a higher degree of security/privacy should be able to get it by paying for the app.

My sense is that more and more people are going to get concerned about the security and privacy of their phones, not to mention the effect of ad serving on the phone's battery.

If you're concerned about the ads use droidwall to block them.

Yes, I assure you the paid version does only require "vibrate" permission in the manifest, no internet or location whatsoever.

You are absolutly right, a level shouldn't have to access internet or location, it's only for being able to display the ads (which should not be too much bothering, as they appear only from time to time).
