Help a problem with an android tablet not on ur list

Android Enthusiast
This is a MID (Mobile Internet Device) model M729B. 1st I can't find this tablet on this forum's list of tablets. So I came here.
1st Problem. The battery [during use, not plugged into the charger] is heating up to the point that the CPU is going into thermal shutdown, the tablet locks up and nothing works other then to shut the tablet off. And the back of the case next to the battery is almost to hot to touch. The battery also gets way to hot during charging. I have opened the tablet up. The battery is soldered in. I could get a new battery if that's the problem. Patrick (my god son) just got this for Christmas. It was gotten from a pawn shop so there is no warranty on it. I took the tablet from Patrick because I fear the battery mite explode on him.
2nd Problem is with the touch screen. If you touch the icon direct center nothing happens. If you touch the icon on the bottom near the border with the icon bellow it then it works. This goes for every icon on the touch screen. I am assuming that there is a way to align the icons so that they will work right when touched in the center. That is also assuming that the battery problem can be solved.

I'm sorry to say,You get what you pay for.
That meaning it is a very cheap tablet and I wouldn't expect to much from it.
I would start by trying a factory reset and see if that will solve your issues,Most of the time it will fix the issues at hand.

A very cheapo tablet bought second-hand. The battery sounds like it might actually be dangerous, risk of fire or exploding. Stop using it immediately. Sending it for recycling is probably about all you can do with the thing I think. It was only equivalent of about $30 when it was new.

Is this what you've got? I think it's actually an older ICS 4.0 device, 3 or 4 years old, it's certainly not recent.

IMO the sort of thing that gives "Made in China" a bad name.

FYI worth a read... :thumbsupdroid:

Best to have modest expectations on this tablet. It's a low-end product most likely to fail sooner rather than later. If after a factory reset the battery still continues to cook itself, power it off. Most batteries are perfectly safe but the cheap ones consisting of off-spec parts are the most likely ones to explode.

That's his mother for you. She doesn't take my advice from me (or from others when I don't know the device in question and I ask around) on buying any electronic device. Her laptop, the same thing ( a pain in the neck to change the hd and memory. I have to take the main cover off), her printer, the same thing. To remove the printer head for cleaning, that thing needs to be taken completely apart. She always goes for the cheapest price without asking if it is worth it. Then expects me to fix it.

is there any chance of pulling the battery and going to the battery plus store and buying a better battery that won't over heat? Or just pull the battery period and run the tablet on external power?

The other issue it's got, it sounds like the touchscreen calibration is off, and there's no way to recalibrate it. Very likely it's always been like that, due to general shoddiness and poor quality.

Sometimes this device came with a keyboard in a case, so it kind of looked like a netbook.

According to Washington State law anything used like that from a pawn shop. There is no mandatory warranty. As long as it worked when it went out the door. That's all a seller has to do by law. If the seller wants to keep a good reputation, that's up to the seller as far as refunds go. More then likely it is going to be recycled and we are going to get him a better one this time. Thanks to all of your input.

Hi Steve, dependant on what the laws are where you live, even bought 2nd Hand you should still be able to get a refund as it clearly doesn't work as advertised/is dangerous.

I definitely agree, stop using the device immediately as if it is getting that hot, it does sound dangerous.
