A question about action bar navigation

How would I program my action so that when the user clicks a menu item is clicked, the app does an action that doesn't navigate. It stays on the same activity, and does another function I program. Thank you in advance for help!
 
Can you give a little more details as to what you are trying to do? Thanks. It sounds like your referring to the pull down notification bar.
