Help a question about tethering

I can get my Kyocera Hydro phone to work as a wifi hot spot for my Gateway laptop. The Gateway laptop has built in wifi. My question is how do I make my phone act as a modem only via the usb cable for a laptop that doesn't have wifi? I found articles online that say it can be done. But nothing as to how to do it.

I have used pdanet from june fabrics in the past and that has worked. Download the app from the playstore on phone. Then on pc go to pdanet website and download program on pc. Follow there easy instructions, plug phone in via usb and it should work fine. Hope that helps.

Just realized that if the pc you have has no internet you cant download the program from website directly. In this case you need to download program onto another pc, copy it to a flash drive and just install it to the pc without the internet.

You must have a rooted phone. If you have the Kyocera Hydro, you need to go to the "All Things Root" section, then download and run Bin4ry's software (V2 worked for me). Then download Barnacle Wifi (or whichever tethering app you like best, its just what I use, and it works fine) once you root your phone, open youre wifi tether software, and your laptop will pick up the hotspot. Thanks for the tip. By the way my phone is rooted. It took me around 2 months of reading everything I could lay my hands on, online about rooting before I got my phone rooted. I primarily use Windows. That was my 1st major dive into Linux/Android os.
