A sad, sad day....

Even EMT's have emergencies...

I still can't believe this happened so I thought I'd share my tale of woe with you guys. First off I just bought this phone and its the best Android phone I've had to date, its simply awesome!
So here goes, I am an emergency medical technician an was on shift last night when it happened. Last night I was responding to an emergency at a stadium during a track meet, as we got closer I began to hear murmurs from the nearby crowd that it looks to be a cardiac related incident. So I don't normally recommend this but in this case the shortest distance between us and our patient was a small 5 foot high chain link fence. I decided it would be prudent to reach our apparently collapsed patient as soon as possible. So over I went, but during my steady yet determined climb over the fence to get to my patient something went bad. I heard as scary yet recognizable sound behind me. It was the all to familiar sound of something smacking the surface of the concrete. Something in me knew instantly what it was. As fear and hesitancy welled up inside of me, I turned my gaze if only to look for just a brief moment. It was then that my eyes fell upon my brand new, not 20 hours old razr maxx face first on the unforgiving pavement. It had apparently taken a dive at the apex of my climb. I quickly retrieved it, stuffed it into my pocket and went on with my business. It was only till after the emergency transpired that I removed it from my pocket to find that the screen was completely shattered! Something inside of me screamed and writhed in anguish, as the proverbial wave of disappointment settled over me.

So here I sit this morning preparing to fill out the claim affidavit to asurion. When all I keep thinking about is now i'm going to get stuck with a used phone in return, to bide me through the next 2 years of my recently renewed contact with Verizon.

It was a sad day....

P.s. The lesson learned here is buy a case immediately after buying a new phone.

I am sooooo sorry! In consolation, I imagine when you get the next razr maxx in your hand... it will have been thoroughly inspected and work perfectly. I keep reading about Maxx's being sent back for replacements...only to hear the problem was software related and someone else figured it out here the next day. So you'll have an awesome piece of hardware...but just need to hang for a few days to get it.

Was your patient OK?

Sorry about your phone but things happen. Hopefully, you have insurance on the phone..

As for your hast in responding to the victim. Often hast is a first responders biggest mistake. Very often in the heat of the moment you do things that have repercussions in regard to the victim and or yourself. A good example is the responder that runs hard over distance to a victim... jumping over fences and such. That responder gets to the victim and the responder is lets say spent / out of breath or worse and cannot assist the victim properly. Long story short, move briskly with urgency but with restraint. I am a retired medical professional and had to learn this early on... Oh, yes, I damaged a phone or two, tore up equipment by accident, ruined clothing and such. Wrote all that stuff ($) off at tax time also.

EMT - Be very proud of your occupation!

That sucks Hasbro! As a fellow paramedic, I can totally understand where you're coming from. I had a very similiar thing happen years back with a Blackberry Tour before I jumped on the android bandwagon. That bone-chilling sound of glass & plastic SLAP on the asphalt. I looked down at my poor collection of "berries" all over the ground.

Needless to say, the Otterbox Defender was built for you and me!

Good luck getting it all straightened out brother.

My replacement will be here Monday! They said all they have in the warehouse are new so we'll see. I'm getting the otter box this time.

...and to think I thought you were talking about all the death and destruction due to the severe weather.

Perspective.

I guess Gorilla Glass has a breaking point and it isn't as resilient as I thought it would be. I've had my Incredible hit the pavement hard a couple times. Fortunately I had a case on it. Good to hear you had insurance on the phone. It is worth it.

I'm glad the patient is doing okay.

You should have intubated it and given it an IV of lactate and ringers, irrigate the wound then transport it in the bus...stat.......

That's the breath of my emergency medical knowledge gleaned from years of TV viewing. I'm glad guys like you are around to save us from guys like me. Thank you!

Sorry for your loss, but at least you have insurance. Best of luck with the replacement!

Thanks appreciate it.

Well, What some people view as only a job, I view as a person trying to save a loved one's life. Your job can literally mean life or death, and it's refreshing to see you try to find the quickest way to access the victim. Thank you for what you do.

Sorry to get off topic :o

Its been refreshing to find much encouragement from all of you guys, thanks for your optimism. My replacement will arrive tomorrow. I'm hoping its new but even if its used how used can it be? The phone is about a month old correct?

I've had generally good luck with insurance replacements and refurbs in general. With the exception of the Samsung Moment refurbs (which were beat up old crap), I've been satisfied with every refurbished phone I've received and found them indistinguishable from new.

Another shout out to EMT's, police and firefighters. That phone has insurance and can be replaced. Thar patient you saved may or may not have insurance - but - definitely can NOT be replaced. Thank you!!

Thanks very much man

As a heart attack survivor I thank you for the patient! In a time of extreme stress, there is nothing like seeing a group of highly trained people come through door that put you at ease, save your life, and get you to the hospital in one piece. The guy who sat with me on the ride to the hospital retired, so I never truly got to say thanks.

Thanks Hasbrobot! Job well done and a big thank you from me!

Paramedic here as well. Luckily I have never broke a phone on duty. I have had numerous close calls and many drops of phones but to date, no cracked screens or the such. I did put a Commuter case on this one as It is large for my small hands and dropped it a couple times after I got it. Luckily on carpet. I dad the DINC and iPhones before that. Never used a case and always kept the phone in my uniform shirt pocket. I had a Defender case on my old iPhone and used the belt clip. I lost that phone the first day using the clip but luckily found it later in the shift when the patients family called to report they found the phone at their house. After that, safely in the shirt pocket withought a case on it.

Mine was safe without a case, in my uniform short pocket as well . So be careful.

I'm currently considering the otterbox defender or commuter case. As far as the defender, is it a pain to unholster? Looks to be bulky as well. What about the commuter? You guys have any personnel preference or recommendations?

(Update)
After combing the case thread, I'm leaning towards the commuter case.

I really like the Commuter. It does take away from the thinness of the phone but it still fits on my shirt pocket just fine. I normally have a pocket notebook in the same pocket with the phone with no issue

Now you are making me think about getting a better case for mine. I'm an ICU/Rapid Response Nurse & have had my phone fall out in codes but so far nothing bloody. I'm worried about getting it filled up with blood in one of the bloodier codes!

I just ordered the commuter case, for $24.00 from amazon. It should be here by friday. In the mean time the replacement will be kept in one of my more secure pants pockets, which is where I should have kept in in the first place. Oh well...

First off, thank you for the job you do.

Secondly, sorry about your issue but I see its been resolved well. as far as cases, consider also a screen protector film
