Help a tale of two phones

My daughter and I visited Paris and London. I with my Dx and my daughter with her Iphone. We both have Verizon service which does not work in Europe.

She was able to use her Iphone for Wifi througout the entire visit. My Dx connected to Wifi but could not use it at all for the two weeks. The phone showed Wifi as connected; but could never use it for anything.

Why? It was very disappointing.

I have always turned off mobile data when I visit my daughter in Canada and had no problem using numerous WiFi connections when there with my Droid X. I'm not sure what your problem was. I thought it might be WiFi 2.4Ghz vs 5Ghz but the iPhone has the same specs as the Droid X in that category. Hmmm

What settings did you use to insure mobile data was turned off while abroad?

did not use any. There is no Verizon service in Europe so why must it be turned off. The problem is that the phone showed there was a WiFi connection on the notification area and when I checked the status on the phone...but was not able to connect to anything. I could not even use the GPS! I kept getting 'GPS signal too weak.' This is the middle of Paris and London. This is a serious failing which makes me think that perhaps the Iphone is the way to go.
