a wasted ascend

i have the ascend for metro and i havent really done much with it so i want to learn how to get the most out of myphone i know that anroid has the power to do so many SWEET things and i just really want to get the hang of using it,(i am going from an iphone 3gs to this and uggg its been frustrating) i feel like my phone is just kind of wasted when all i used it for is a GPS facebook instant messaging and phone basics ya know? I know theres no way that i am ready to begin rooting my phone half the time i dont even know what all the accronyms you guys are using throughout the forum even mean and thats kind of frustrating as well. i know this is going to take time to learn and ive been doing some research on here and through some other forums but i think i would do much better with people responding to me personally i get kind of confused with a million conversations going on at once.

so here are my main problems with my phone.
1) battery life! ugh 4 times a day i plug in my phone! and i do have an app killer and im sure i prob dont use it as often as i should but i can use it and exit open it again and like 5 apps are running again NOR do i want to carry around multiple batteries or my charger all the time
2) i would love to get rid of all the stupid crap metro has on it like Boingo wifi hot spots for example, i dont need to pay for wifi at gas stations and mcdonalds
3) speed. it takes forever to run any type of game and alot of games i just cant run, like angry birds just doesnt work bc trying to shoot the bird i gotta wait like 30secs inbetween each fingermovement
4) is there anyway to make the predictive texting smarter??? i type "oh" it changes to "other" and sooo many other super annoying things
5) i cant email pictures. ive tried i sent and email of a pic to a friend one night, and the next morning i took another pic and didnt send it to anyone but somehow the person i sent the email the night b4 got the picture i took the next morning
6) my app market hardly ever works!!! always force closing and my updates never seem to go through it constantly says update manually but it just doesnt go through.
-also why is it that there are apps out there that my appmarket doesnt have??

is that firmware to 2.2 out yet?

other than that i just want to get the most out of my phone and would appreciate anyhelp i can get
 
ok list of answers....


1. drop the task killer. especially if its an automatic kind. and any "juice defender" type apps.

2-3. check tis guide. http://androidforums.com/ascend-all-things-root/320265-ultimate-ascend-customization-guide.html look at Blaotware removal and maybe even icarus/cm6

4. get a better keyboard. also if you type a word you can tap it in the predictive text area twice to save it to your dictionary.

5. use "capture photo" as your image source. or email a photo already in gallery.

6. app market does that.... the servers flood, the app fails if ram is low (and since you are stock it may well be) and often updates drop over 1x connection.

no. 2.2 is a pipe dream at this point until metro makes more money off the TapouT (TOE)

look in hte guide, get a better phone.

I'm no expert here,but,I empathize w/your situation,I'm sorta TECH deficient myself.Let's tackle your issues here as best as possible.

1)GET RID OF THE TASK KILLER! Not shouting,just trying to get a point across.Its killing your battery.Same w/the battery saving apps.

2)You have to root(the ANDROID equivalent of jailbreaking) to get rid of unwanted METRO/CRICKET apps.See the guide listed in the sub-forum ASCEND- ALL THINGS ROOT.If you feel intimidated doing this,wait until you're comfortable enough to do so,or find someone here in the forum in your area.Perhaps they could meet you somewhere & help you out.

3)GAMES will run smoother once you root & run even better if you choose to install an alternative O/S,such as ICARUS 1.1,CM6 or CM7.Again,see ASCEND-ALL THINGS ROOT for more details.

4)PREDICTIVE TEXT will become better the more you use it.The trick is to long press on words as they appear & save them to the dictionary.Many,many other keyboards are available on the MARKET as well.

5)Email:I've had no problems,I'm w/CRICKET.I've been trying to help someone w/problems similar to yours that is on METRO,w/no success, don't know if there is a connection there or not.

6)APP MARKET: probably my buggiest app on my phone since day one.Lots of F/C's,but,I've always managed to d/l an app w/a LOT of patience.

You might want to also take a look at AMAZON APPSTORE.You'll have to enable 'UNKNOWN SOURCES' in your settings to use this.I've been using it since the 1st day it opened last month,I'm very satisified w/it.Easy downloads,no problems whatsoever!
 
allright guys i got rid of the task killer
took a look at that link you posted token and will get more into it as i go on but as i said all the frickin accronyms make my head spin lol but will be getting on that asap

i have been using the capture photo option as well as emailing directly from gallery still no go on both yahoo and gmail accounts

was looking into a new keyboard but i dont really want to hve to spend money on one, and couldnt find a free one with decent reviews, any suggestions?

thank you for the tip with the adding of the predictive text i didnt know how to do that and honestly i cant stand the swipe thing i type faster the normal way

and yes ive looked into getting a better phone lol of course i did but theyre all like 300+ ya know? and i really dont want to have to spend a bunch of money on apps i hate doing that, if i wanted to spend more money to make my phone cooler i couldve just afforded to get a better phone

and im really wary about rooting, i dont really want to do that without a full comprehension of what i am getting myself into as it apparently is a permanent thing that can possibly break my phone and yet again i dont want to do it and then waste it bc i dont know how to use it completly
 
also i would REALLY love to be able to use my instant messanger and voice texting... anyway to do that? i know people that use it and they love it and it works great

I believe there are quite a few free text apps on the MARKET that may allow you to voice text.If you're still having trouble using the MARKET app on your phone,try using the web based version at https://market.android.com

Again,AMAZON APPSTORE is worth taking a look at.Once you register,you can take advantage of their 'PAID APP OF THE DAY FOR FREE' program.I so far have d/l 21 such apps & actually use over ½ of them on a regular basis.BTW,I got the paid version of SWIFT KEYBOARD using this program.
 
def look into icarus 1.1 rom..its alot better than the stock rom.. i use big buttons keyboard..its free, the icon youll see is a white square with 2 blue B,s in it..
i use system panel lite to kill my apps..

another keyboard that is good is htc keyboard, it runs good on my cm7, and it ran good on icarus, some have had problems with it on cm6 but dont quote me on that...lol good luck tho!!!!!

WTF is cm7 and cm6>!?!?! lol im assuming its a rom?? man i feel like a moron when it comes to this crap!

so basically what youre telling me is that im going to have to learn to root my phone in order to be able to take full advantage of it? cuz as of right now im just planning on getting iphone 5 when it comes out im so friggan done with android....

explain to me how android force closes on my phone?!?!?! today i had a loading screen on my phone for like 20 mins!!! couldnt do anything all it said was "loading..."
 
is it 100% nesesary to back up my apps? i mean really i could deal with re downloading stuff, i dont really have anythng on my phone that i care about no game stats or anything just the pics which i already pulled from the SD card
