i think its because it all depends on what make, model, FW and what version of android you have on your phone (and maybe what network your on also).
eg theres no point in having samsung apps for your x10 if they dont work also if something needs the v2.1 update...theres no point in showing them if you have 1.6

For example, you won't find the official Twitter app on the Xperia X10 as it needs Android 2.1.
And you won't find the official eBay app outside of the US/UK/Canada (either canada or europe cant remember which off the top of my head). So while you'll find more on the laptop it's best to look on the phone and research the app on the laptop if need be.
There's an SE app - Mash Up, which is supposed to list some of the best apps, or rather people can make lists. It was marketed as an app for the X10 but, Twitter is listed on some lists, as are other apps that aren't compatible with the X10
