Root About rooting

Hi, this will probably be my first Android phone but I'm planning on using it on another carrier (not T-Mobile). I have read that you need an OTA Update to 2.2.1 for rooting. Are there any other ways to get this updates or are there gonna be other methods for rooting?
 
Using MT4G on anything other than T-mobile is called unlocking not rooting.

You do need the OTA before you can root, they are working on finding a way to do it manually, but nothing atm.
Yes, I'm sure someone will come up with a one-click root system soon enough, just have to wait a bit.
 
Thanks Jnoc. I know that I need to unlock the phone first, but I will eventually want to root it too.

Are there any good sites for getting unlock codes? I don't mind paying for them.
 
just call tmobile and ask for the code. I did it on a moto razr recently and did not cost me a cent. Sold the phone to a buddy on att. just tell them you want the unlock code.
