Root About to give up on rooting my HTC TB

I'm about to give up on rooting my TB. I'm having a hard time understanding how to do the whole process considering there's not really any noob friendly tutorials.

Here's what I don't understand - the whole rooting process, the process has me confused - some tutorials tell me to use "Revolutionary" to root my phone and that I have to downgrade it - some tell me that I can use trtr's tool that works on all versions

but, bottomline is - there's no easy way to explain this to someone who just got into this. I don't know how to install a ROM, I don't understand how to boot into recovery, I don't know whether or not what ROMs are stable and which are unstable - I don't understand how I'm supposed to update the ROMs that I have encase there's a bug fix for that specific ROM.

I'm overwhelmed, and most of the answers I'm getting are vague and don't allow me to understand completely how the process works. and everytime I ask someone "how do I do this" everyone points me to some stickied thread with instructions that really don't help because they're old and outdated and don't give a specific way to root your phone.

the original post in http://androidforums.com/thunderbolt-all-things-root/418539-thunderbolt-root-unroot-thread.html has the most current up to date info that is known to me.

first,forget what youve read about having to downgrade(i dont think it is an option anymore with .19,but thats one thing i cant test on my phone). with .9,downgrade was an option instead of temp root.

with .19 software,your choices are simple:
1)use the directions in the OP of that thread(and in your reply on the last page) to temp root manually,then manually run Revolutionary

for specific tips on revolutionary,read thru the info on their page,and watch the video that preceds the manual direcions here

2)run trters tool.

either will get you to a rooted,stock phone.

as far as what roms are stable,and what arent,youll need to do a little research for yourself. the bug list will always be in the original post,so you can read thru that and the changelogs to see whats working and whats not.

as far as updates,the rom developer will generally say if its ok to flash his updates overtop of his previous builds without a data wipe.

again,you are fustrated because youre asking very broad questions that we cannot really answer.

the rom list here is outdated. for info on current roms,look on xda:

its perfectly understandable to be overwhelmed. just keep reading and gaining info. alot of things will start to click once you actually start doing them.
 
So you why does that post still say I need to downgrade my .19, and also how would I use those instructions via an Ubuntu system? I have adb on my Ubuntu system. Also why does one need to "temp root" I don't quite understand what temp rooting means.
 
I appreciate you taking the time out to explain it all to me, although I'm still a little confused, is it possible to do all this on an Ubuntu system? Also, what's the difference between this way & trtr's tool?

all these i believe i have addressed in the root thread,in post 338

i think we will all be less confused if you can pick one of your threads,and confine your questions to it. i have allready merged 2 of them,and the multiple threads require multiple replys,or else folks finding them in future searches will not have the info that they need. one of my big pet peeves is any thread that is not resolved somehow,and/or does not contain all relevent info and results.

the difference is simply this:
the directions in the original post of the root thread are how you do it manually

trters tool is doing this same process automatically.

thats it. the tool is doing the exact same process,so dont think that one is better than the other,use wichever method is most comfortable.

i think the best way for you to root is to borrow a windows machine,download and run trters tool. if you just want a rooted phone,this will prolly be the least fustrating for you. :)
 
So what would I do after I rooted it? Say if ICS gets put out like it said at the end of the month, how would I be able to get it while being rooted?

we should have leaks and such prior,and have time to prepair.

the best way to update is to simply flash a rom in recovery. folks like jrocker will offer stock rooted roms,hopefully he will continue his work with ICS :)

you do NOT want to attempt to install an OTA while running a custom recovery.

Can we merge this thread and continue it into my other thread?

Back on topic, I heard one user mention to trtr about his tool that it only works on 64 bit computers, while I only have a 32 bit that I can use a Virtualbox on for Windows XP and or Vista, maybe 7 - that I could try to this on. But I want security knowing it will work on a 32 bit
