About to upgrade to a droid

I am about to upgrade to a droid from a moto razr. I know this is quite a jump so I have a couple of questions.

I am trying to decide wheather to upgrade on line or in a store. How big of a deal is it to activate the phone.

I have opened a Gmail account in anticipation of getting a droid. I have imported all my email addresses and phone numbers into my Gmail contacts list. When I set up the phone will both email addresses and phone number sync to my new phone?

What is google voice and how does it fit into the droid picture?

I have been reading this forum for a few weeks. I see lots of different problems folks are having. I do realize that on a forum you will see different problems as people are trying to find repairs. Just how reliable and stable is the droid.

Last one for now, How well will a droid stand up to everyday use? I am a firefighter and do not work in an office. I do understand that with any electronics water, hard treatment, and abuse are not a good thing. But I am thinking about dust, mild dirt, etc, I plan to get a rubberized fitted case.

These questions are about the Motorola droid not the Eris,

i have a nexus one(which i love!!!), so i cannot help you about
the droid. i can tell you that when you get your android device
and power it up and follow what it tells you your contacts/calender/
phone numbers/e-mail address, will all seamlessly flow right into your
phone. it really is nice and smooth. then you can set up(in settings)
if you want it to continue syncing by itself(that's how mine is set up)
so when you make changes on your phone or calender, it does it all
for you. i really like it. and if you have to get a new android device,
turn it on and put in your gmail acct. and boom up and running.:)
 
As soon as you enter your gmail account info everything will sync to your droid (names, phone #, email, address, calendar).

I would recommend singing up to get a google voice invite ASAP. When I signed up for one it took me a couple weeks to get it. I use it on my droid just for the voicemail feature. Instead of paying verizon for visual voicemail I use only google voice voicemail and the google voice app from the market, works great. When you get your google voice account just don't forget to activate google voice mail for your phone (in settings).

Thanks, I was wondering why my google voice app wasnt working! It's always the mundane details that get me...
 
For what it's worth ... I would suggest visiting the store. They'll set up your Google account for you and show you how to access it. They'll also spend as much time as you want discussing the phone's functions and answering any questions. Activating the phone is not a big deal ... but being comfortable with what you have invested in is. Honestly, the people at the store want you to be happy with your choice. They are patient and love to see the "now I understand" look you'll have on your face when you get your questions answered.
