aCar - Track your vehicles

I just restored your backup file and checked a few of your reminders in random. They all seem to be correct... Would you please give me an explicit example of a service type you've already enter a record for but the reminder is still there?

You are right all appear to the right. The few that are dont seem right are because I did not enter the details when I entered the service record.

Great app, BTW, thank you for all the effort.

Been using this app for several weeks. Works great. Coming from the iPhone I was worried that I wouldn't find an app to replace Cubby, which now I realize sucked in comparison to aCar. Thanks!

IMO, I think the Gas Cubby and aCar apps are pretty similar. aCar has definitely more graphs compared to the Cubby. One thing I like about the Cubby is not having to enter decimals when entering the gas price and gallons.

Talk about the phone comparison and that is a totally different ball game.

I also used Personal Vehicle Manager for a few years. The very first time I used aCar I liked it enough to donate towards it.

One feature request if possible:
An option to override such as if you had old records you are inputting. Not necessarily just "are you sure you want to input non-sequential data" but one like a checkbox in the partial and missed fill up area so that you can't accidentally input the wrong info if you aren't paying attention?

Tried to do a manual backup today (already donated and registered) but got the following error message:

"Error: Could not backup the data and/or the application settings due to an error! Contact the author if the problem insists."

I have it set to backup on my SD card which has plenty of room.

Great App Armond, Thanks! (donated)

I would just like to point out an issue I experienced. I was trying to import my gas cubby data from my iPhraud and spent the better part of two hours perplexed. I read the usage tips carefully and still could not get my .csv imported.

By luck, after the better part of two hours, I stumbled upon the solution. My .CSV data had the date in the mm/dd/yyyy format... however, I had to select the mm-dd-yyyy format to get my data imported. This however provided faulty date data (every entry was for the month of june in bizare years, like 0167). However, by editing the date data (via simple text editor) in my .CSV to mm-dd-yyyy and reimporting... all is well. Just thought this odd.

Nice app, but one thing keeping me from using it...
It needs to be setup so that you can share the data between phones.
We have 3 cars in our household and me and my wife randomly drive each one...is there any easy way to keep this data synced up? I know on some apps such as the grocery list app, we can both update from our phones and the info stays insync through a web database...any plans for this?

Armond, thanks for the app! Looks to be very nice. As soon as I saw this thread I went and downloaded it. I'm hope to get an export from Gas Cuby to pull in my data from that app. I'll provide you with constant feedback for any issues I might run in to, if any.

Thanks,
John

One thing i dont like with this app is that it wont calculate MPG unless you do complete fill-ups everytime, part fills just dont calculate anything.

Cant you make it calculate MPG based on the refills and distances covered regardless of it being a full fill up or not?

I tried making every record a full tank regardless of amount and the maths has gone wrong in my testing.
I basically put in the following details:

That would be impossible. There is no way to calculate mpg without knowing how much fuel you burned and how many miles were driven. MPG is a very basic calculation but without filling the tank there is no way to do the calculation. For example lets say today you drove 100 miles and added 10 gallons of fuel bringing the fuel level to somewhere around half a tank then tomorrow you drove another 100 miles and added 5 gallons bringing the fuel level to around 2/3 of a tank, how would you calculate that? You can add partial fill-ups but calculations can't be done until you fill the tank. The calculation will include partial fill-ups and all miles driven but not until the tank is full.

There is an oil change entered on March 22, 2010. I have set it up to remind me every 3 months so a reminder should be showing up right now but it isn't. I know I'm just missing something simple here.

I've been using Roadtrip on my Ipod Touch for the past year and three months. I just got my first droid phone and acar looks like a great replacement.

You mean that you don't see any reminder for Oil Change on the main screen or on the View Vehicle screen for that specific vehicle?

I've totally redesigned the reminder mechanism in upcoming 2.1.0 :-) They will be posted to your phone status bar even if aCar is not running (instead of the alert popup). Moreover there is a "Reminders Center" so that you can see more details about each reminder (last service, next alert, whether it's silent or not, etc). Many of these problems may vanish away with the new system. Stay tuned!

Ok, got the reminder to work, now a question. Is the only place a reminder shows up on the 'view vehicle' screen? Will it not put a notification beside the icon on the home screen?

Starting with 2.1.0, the reminders will be posted to your phone status bar :-) See my previous reply...

Ok, I just did a fill up and a reminder 'popped up' about an oil change overdue. I cannot get that to repeat. I think this program is going to work for me as I will soon be donating. Is there any chance of getting the reminders in the main screen to be on top instead of having to scroll all the way to the bottom? It just brings it to your attention better.

Only the coming due and overdue reminders are listed on main screen. Just scroll down to the last block (Reminders) to see them.

Reminders Center in 2.1.0 will provide you much better control over your active reminders. Stay tuned!

Hello,

I have been a long term user (4 years and multiple vehicles) of Personal Vehicle manager on my WinMo 6. Its time for a change of phone and I am considering the HTC Desire. What is stopping me from taking the plunge is a couple of applications, Personal Vehicle Manager among them.

This has a Desktop application that is very useful when reviewing data. Also mine has 4 years worth of data in it.

What I want to know is, is there a sure shot method of importing data from Perosnal Vehicle Manager ? How is it done ?

Is a desktop version planned in any future ? Please clarify.

Thankyou

aCar is capable of importing any plain CSV file with a flexible user-interface to map your CSV columns to aCar data fields.

See if Personal Vehicle Manager supports CSV export or you can somehow do it.

Also please let me know if this application is widely used in Windows Mobile world and I may prepare a dedicated import for that (without doing anything manual) like other apps aCar already supports.

You can enter your historical records in whatever order you like. You should just keep one minor rule in mind. The date and odometer reading values must be in sync with each other. Let me give you an example:

Suppose you already have a record dated on "June 17, 2010" with odometer reading of "45630 mi". You can not enter "June 23, 2010" and "45392 mi" nor you can enter "June 10, 2010" and "45920 mi".

Let me know if this doesn't work for you.

Please make sure your SD Card is in place and it's NOT mounted on your computer. If you don't know what this means, just make sure your phone is NOT connected to your computer.

Please let me know if the problem still insists.

Thanks for reporting this. It will be great if you can email me the original CSV file you were going to import. I need to further investigate it.

There isn't any online syncing functionality at the moment. But it's part of my long term plan ;-)

Hi Armond, first off thanks for such a great app, sent a donation your way!
I recently changed roms on my phone (which involved a full wipe) and forgot to export my aCar data. I have a backup of the filesystem but I can't find the acar data anywhere. Where is it stored on disk, and any chance I can copy it to my new disk so aCar will read it?
My sdcard backup directory for aCar was empty, so I guess I hadn't been using it long enough to trigger that.

Edit: After several hours I finally managed to get my filesystem backup images in a linux VM, then use a nifty little program called unyaffs (http://code.google.com/p/unyaffs/downloads/detail?name=unyaffs&can=2&q=) to extract my datadata filesystem image (since desktop linux distros don't have yaffs support in kernel). From there I guessed you were using a SQLite db to do your storage so it was off to the android SDK to figure out where that those were stored. Phew! After all that I finally got the tiny SQLite db copied over to my new /data/data/ dir through adb shell and now all my data is back and I'm going to be sure to do a backup next time I flash a rom haha. Burned a few hours with that, but hey it was kinda fun ;)

Armond,

Excellent App. Thanks for responding to our comment concerning calculation of Miles/fill-up. The changes you implemented worked wonderfully. Once again, thanks for being so responsive and the development of such a great App to track my auto records.

Very excellent App

But i've a little question
I don't see how to setup the initial odometer of my car (it's not brand new so it's not 0), and when i setup a new car, i don't see any parameter for that

Thanks a lot

Glad to hear that you've got your data back. And thanks a lot for sharing your solution. I'm sure users will appreciate that.
