aCar - Track your vehicles

Very excellent App

But i've a little question
I don't see how to setup the initial odometer of my car (it's not brand new so it's not 0), and when i setup a new car, i don't see any parameter for that

Thanks a lot

There isn't any such feature to record the initial odometer of your cars. Just start with your first fillup or service record (whatever odometer reading you have) and it will be fine :-)

aCar was mentioned in Consumer Reports (not sure if you knew).... Congratulations!

I just acquired my first Android phone and am looking forward to some free time when I'll have a chance to import my cars' data from the spreadsheets I have.

I used to use a similar program for WinMo until one day my data file got corrupted (not backed-up). From then I switched to using excel but am ready to take the plunge again for the benefit of automated reminders.

I really like the app. I have been using Car Care on iPhone OS, but aCar offers some advantages like more details for entries and the graphs are more informative. I like how you use scatter-plot graphs with actual time values on the x-axis instead of just bar graphs with evenly spaced intervals for each fill-up entry.

Add GPS functionality so I can record where I fill up & service my vehicle, and I'll happily switch over & donate. The sync option would be awesome, too.
I'm going to use this to also track our ATVs so this will be pretty useful! Only thing is you usually track ATV and work equipment maintenance by hours instead of miles. :(
You are right. And I'm getting more votes for supporting ATVs, bikes and boats which are all based on hours. I'm not sure how well I can integrate such features in order to keep the usage simple. From what I can see, I don't see this implemented in near future. I should think and brainstorm more about this... Or I might need to come up with a new app. Who knows! ;-)
I would suggest changing Units from a global setting to a vehicle setting. For compatibility, you could leave Units as a global setting which new vehicles use by default, but the user can then customize on a per-vehicle basis. And instead of having the user choose a derived unit (e.g. MPG or km/L), I think it would also be best to allow users to specify their preferred fundamental units of volume (e.g. gal or L) and distance/time (e.g. mi, km, or hr).

Keep up the good work!

Hi Armond!

First of all, I really like your app.
but here is the reason for my post. before you released the latest update, I was able to customized the octance settings of the fuel I am using. for whatever reason, this is not possible anymore with your latest update, OR I cannot find the how to change the settings.
I live in Vienna, Austria, and I get 98 or 100 octane at the pump pretty much anywhere. I don't like to be limited to just the lower settings that you have as presets in the app. PLEASE change this so I can customize to what I want.
I used to live in New York City for many years. I am familiar with gas stations in the U.S. but please don't forget the rest of the world... :-)
Thnx, and thanx for the otherwise great app.

On my U20i I just hold my finger down on the fuel brand you want to edit and go from there, which brings me to my question.

When entering data on the U20i from just using the touch screen, it says required instead of the question I need to answer forcing me to look at the question and go back in to answer it, my only negative I have on the app, other than that it's great and I donated [= thanks

Armond,
I would like to see two features in the app.

1st. - use the maps/search api to auto populate the location. This would be nice if it was simply GPS coordinates, but if it would list filling stations or service stations it would be great.

2nd. - It would be great if we had the option to take a photo and have it linked to the database. e.g. Take a picture of the receipt or work order for repairs.

I just changed phone, and if I donate again, will I get a new registration? I'm asking because it'd be linked to the same email account.

If you donated, just e-mail him with your old "Pro code" or whatever it's called and tell him you updated and he should be able to reset it so you can activate pro on the new device

I got this app a couple of weeks ago. It is easily my favorite app on my Incredible so far. I almost immediately donated as well, love this app.

So far, I am basically just using it for MPG tracking on my FJ Cruiser, but I am going to look into using it for service records, etc, if I can find the invoices for the services I have had done.

Awesome application, and if I could have it do one more thing, it would be online sharing so my wife could enter data when she fills up the truck. Thanks for a great app.

I'm another who found this a few weeks ago, and donated almost immediately. Thanks for this great app!

I would love to see the addition of Tire Wear (front and rear) and Brake Readings (front and rear) to the Service Rec.'s. Eg. 9/11/10 Tire Wear Front: 7/32 remaining, Rear 7/32 remaining and Brake Readings Front 6 mm, Rear 3 mm remaining.

It is great to see a thread with the developer so involved in helping out.

I am just coming to Android from iPhone. I have been using the iPhone app, Road Trip to keep track of my auto expenses. I see your app says it will import from Road Trip. Is that the iPhone app you are talking about, or some other Android app?

On the iPhone app, Road Trip, I can email the data backup file directly to myself from the app. That gives me a backup file in the gmail cloud. I can also quickly open that file in Excel since it will already be on my PC. Can your app do that? What about backing up to DropBox? That would be a great option.

I am seriously considering buying your app, if the program you mentioned importing from is the same Road Trip I am using already.

Thanks,

Mark

Any former users of the iPhone app Road Trip here? How does it compare? Should I buy aCar or stick with Road Trip on my iPod Touch?

I've been averaging about 30mpg for the past few months, then all of a sudden I spiked to 45mpg after a fillup, then immediately after dropped to 15mpg which essentially leveled my mpg back to 30mpg or so. That's fine, but my "Best MPG" and "Worst MPG" are now significantly skewed. Any help on this?

78,619-78,420=199 miles / 13.081 gal = 15.213 mpg

The math looks right.

Lets check for a number transposition --
(78,240-77,942)/10.574=28.18mpg
(78,619-78,240)/13.081=28.97mpg

Looks like an operator input error to me.

I too used road trip on my ipod touch and switched to Acar when I got my first android phone. The developer is active and takes suggestions and is avaliable for tech support. And now, Acar does all and more than road trip. And, you can import all of your road trip information right into Acar. Go for it !!:o

Yes, I was aware when it was published in August issue. It's such a great honor for aCar! :-)

I will be glad to hear about your migration experience from Excel to aCar...

Add GPS functionality so I can record where I fill up & service my vehicle, and I'll happily switch over & donate. The sync option would be awesome, too.

Both of the features are already in my todo list and I will consider them in a future version.

Just a question... Is recording your fillup and service locations (latitude and longitude) enough for you? Or you want something further? like showing the location on the map...

I would suggest changing Units from a global setting to a vehicle setting. For compatibility, you could leave Units as a global setting which new vehicles use by default, but the user can then customize on a per-vehicle basis. I can quite understand your requirements but the problem is that it will be somehow complicated both for normal end-users and for me:
- For normal end-users because not all of them like complexity, bells and whistles and numerous options. It frightens them!
- For me because it will be hard to come up with an overall statistics and graphs when there are vehicles with different units. I should think something about this part if I want to implement it.

What you want to do is already there but the place has just been changed...
Go to "Management" screen (accessible right from the main screen), then tap on "Fuel Specs" tab. All fuel specifications along with their octanes/cetanes are listed there. You can customize the list however you like (edit/delete) or even add your own custom fuel spec. Notice the big PLUS icon at the top. You can long press on any existing item to get a context menu to edit or delete it.
