Help accessibility through usb

CrackYah

Lurker
with older galaxies when i connected them through usb i would have to go into the phone to allow the pc access to files, with the s3 it is automatically available. where can i change this?

im not quite sure what you are asking in older phones the option of mass storage mode was available which is not there in the s3. When u connect the phone to pc in the notification bar it gives u the option to connect as MTP or Camera.

You cannot turn it off. Previously you could choose between:

Charge only
USB Mass storage.

Now, You can only choose between:

PTP (Photo Transfer Protocol)
MTP (Media Transfer Protocol)

There is no longer a charge only option. However, most of the reason you had charge only, was because USB Mass storage would prevent the phone accessing the SD card when it was connected to a PC. No such limitation applies with PTP and MTP, so they see no need to offer charge only.

so basically if my phone gets lost/stolen there is nothing to prevent said finder/thief from accessing files huh... -_-

I'm not sure if the encryption option would prevent access from a PC. Theres also the Samsung Dive remote wipe (unless you're one of the unlucky americans whose carrier removed that function)

Even with the older phones people could access your information from a stolen phone unless you used encryption.

If there was a screen lock and default mode was set to charge only, they couldn't mount the card on the PC because they cant access notification area to change the connection to UMS. They would have to use a card reader.

With this in mind, I was going to say the OP had a point. That said though, testing with a pattern lock, the device shows up (and even says "what do you want to do?") but until i enter my pattern, it wont show the cards in windows.

So the short answer is, PIN / Password / Pattern lock your phone and they can't mount the data on a PC without taking the SD out.

I wasn't very clear with my comment.:o This is what I meant to refer to.

No, you were clear. When I started quoting you, I was under one impression that was basically "short of taking out the SD, a thief couldnt easily access the data if it was set to charge only, bit now even that has gone" but actually I realised by testing further half way through the post that screenlock protects all.

Actually, if all important data is on internal memory, screen lock is pretty good in itself. You'd have to root and use adb to get to the data....

Actually, I reckon if you had only 2 folders on Sd card. One called "naked girls" and another called "no naked girls" and put all your data in the latter (but a few naked girls in the former), I don't reckon anyone would look at your data. I'm sure thieves are only looking for pictures of naked girls.
