Accessing Contacts through Gmail app

I am new to Android and am using a Samsung Captivate (rooted, Voodoo lagfix, sideloading, AWDLauncher) and ran into a bit of an issue with the Gmail app. When I am using Messaging and Phone, the option is present to use the Contacts app to get the contact details for the person I am sending to. In the Gmail app, I can't seem to find such an option. This leads to a common pattern of opening Gmail, Compose, crap, can't find contact info, dump out to Contacts, find person, select email address, compose new email, then write the email. This leaves me with an unsaved email sitting in the background that I always forget about until I start pressing the back button repeatedly. Is there some way to access the Contacts app while composing an email in Gmail app?

If your contacts are saved to your gmail account, then you should see them as you start typing their name in a scrollable drop-down list. This works on the google gmail application, so might be worth downloading that if you haven't already got it.

(The HTC mail client has a little person avatar you can press to search contacts, but that's probably of no use to you)

I didn't know about that. I've been using the Gmail app instead of the email app, it was just not immediately obvious that that would do anything.

After the latest update to it, this isn't happening (at least, it's not working for me, and I've seen several others complaining about it). Hopefully it'll be fixed soon.
