Guys, want to be able to access movies and music on my home network attached storage.
Anybody done it and can you share how? Any software apps can help me do it?
By the way I am rooted.

No problem, I use it all the time. Get ES File manager, which has an integrated LAN Manager and many more useful tools and its FREE from the Play Store.

When you open the app simply look at the top right under your notification bar and you'll see 3 icons starting from left to right with:

Local > LAN > Cloud

Choose LAN by either tapping on the icon or swiping left or right; then at the bottom you'll notice a horizontal band with menus > select > + New > Search > Refresh > More.

Press either > Search - this will find all Devices (shared or accessible via NEFS/Samba) or > + New - where you can enter the server details manually.

Its as easy as that. If you long-press an item you'll get tick boxes appear and corresponding menus (i.e. copy, paste, delete, etc.). The app even provides an integrated multimedia player but you may want to use one of your choice. :)

I don't suppose this helps much, but if you happen to have a synology NAS, they have a suite of apps for accessing your data, just need a ddns account to route the connection for ya.

Thank you!

I'm trying this but can't get it to work. I pressed the search icon and it found the ip address of my laptop. When I select that it asks for a password. My laptop (Win 7) boots up to my account without a password, so I'm not sure what to type there. Just pressing OK doesn't work.
