The place where you can get your self in trouble is that the home key will take you to the home screen, and then your face can open some apps for you while your chatting away, but you have to slide for speaker and mute. I wish I could show you a screen shot. There is also a slide to answer, but the hard key still works which is kind of redundant.

This is such a pain in the butt.
My phone always mutes when I need to use my hands and so press the phone against my cheek with my shoulder. Holding it out from my face is obviously impossible in this situation. Pressing back or home won't help, because then I'll just start clicking app icons with my face. This needs a real fix.

Repair center told me i had to do the download and update myself or wait 2 weeks for there techs to learn how to update it.
i had to search like hell but finally found the new drivers and installed it myself

I have the Verizon HTC Thunderbolt and this is a hugh problem and happens to me all the time (though, I had a first generation T-Mobile MyTouch several years ago and this didn't happen to me then, it wasn't a problem at all.) no matter what ear I use (though I believe I predominately use my right) or what else I try. Like hitting the home key after the call is connected as I have been doing. The screen does go or turn off, but as mentioned by some posters it doesn't always stay off, frequently it will randomly turn back on and cause me to end up hitting and activating something. This happens even as I have been hitting the home and going back to the home screen. When I do this I now usually end up hitting the widgets or shortcuts as though I wanted to move them or change their location. And, the last time I ended up hitting and activating the voice dialer/search button and the person I was speaking to then sounded all distorted and screaching before the call got disconnected. I had no idea what had happened, I just thought had a bad signal and I said I can't hear you but before I could finish the sentence the call was disconnected. This is so aggravating and such a serious problem that I have been searching the APP Market for any app that will or can resolve this problem as well as scowering the internet for an app or any possible sollution and so far I have come up with nothing. Which only means I have to waste more of my time continuing my search and I will let you all know if I ever do find or come up with any viable sollution. Please, I hope all of you will do the same and let me know if you find or know of any sollution. Thank you. Though now, more than this being a nusence, extremely aggraviting, and a serious problem, this is just absolutly and completely unacceptable especially for any high end Droid Phone. Something really needs to be done to fix this, either they need a software update to be able to adjust the phone settings and calibrations or they need to develope an app, either way they need figure this out and do something to fix it. to more of an answer. Moment users now have EM28 based roms. These roms seem to have totally fixed this problem. I've tried to get my phone to do it and it won't. and that makes me happy.
previously, it was a problem with lag. The phone wasn't fast enough to respond to the position and proximity change so by the time it would turn the screen off, it wouldn't know what to do with itself. Now, with the current roms and kernels available, that isn't a problem. It only starts to become an issue if A) you have eaten up all of your memory and the phone is tweaking, and B) your screen is all gunked up nasty.
Now, as for your personal problem with the thunderbolt. Good luck. That phone should be fast enough to not have this issue. Have you raised hell with the Verizon people yet? Maybe you got a bad phone. Statistically, every 1 and 3 electronic devises are bad, and that is after quality control stops the really bad ones from getting to the shelves.
Maybe a new unit will solve your problem.
or maybe it is a big problem and the only way HTC or even Verizon can do anything about it is if enough people openly bitch about it.
so if you haven't yet, do yourself and the entire thunderbolt community a favor and go bitch to your Verizon guy about it.

only way I was able to figure it out was to root the phone and step up the the EB28 Roms.
The problem is that the phone is so laggy that by the time it figures out that you've put the phone up to your ear, you've already pressed some other button.
There is a screen lock app you can get from the market, but then you have to make the call, go to the home screen while the phone is ringing, then lock the screen, and put it up to your ear. People have said that, that works. Problem is, there is a lot of lag to do that, so it is possible that the person you were calling has answered by the time you even get the phone to your ear.
The other problem is, if you need to push any buttons or answer any prompts, or hell, even hang up on the person you're talking to, you have to unlock the screen, then deal with the lag to get back into the active call, then you can do something.
At that point, it is just easier to root the phone and get the latest and greatest EB28 roms on there.
I've been running EB28 (which is android 2.2.2, not 2.1 like we have now) for a little while now and I swear, it has turned this phone into the phone that we all thought we were buying.
This is so stupid, I can't believe they set it up this way. I basically can't use my phone normally. I try to hold the top of the phone to my ear and pull the bottom as far away as I can. Many people I talk to have this same problem. I just read this tip about hitting the home button. I will try that.
Hi I have the same prob. I recently out a new screen protector in my S3 & noticed it was covering those 2 dots beside the front camera (proximity whatever their called lol) so I just repositioned it & that's done the trick. Hope it works for everyone else who is dealing with face muting & hanging up/dialing.
