Help Accounts & Sync stopped unexpectedly

ljbami

Newbie
I updated a few apps at once (don't even remember, but probably includes Titanium, Lookout, Epocrates), and then my sync didn't work. I can't sync contacts at all, and Google calendar syncs by itself sporadically. When I try the menu, I get the message "The application Account and sync (process com.htc.settings.accountsync) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again."

The novice fapproach (reboot, battery pull) hasn't worked. I am using xtrSENSE 5.0.1. I only flash new ROMS with a lot of hand holding from this forum, so haven't done it in a while. I think as the community of Eris users dwindles, I will be forced to get a new phone because nobody will be left to get me out of the weeds....

Appreciate any help you can give! It would be great to sync my contacts, only if to have them when I go get a new phone if I can't get this Eris back to its old self. (It's also pretty laggy now).

If you don't have a relatively recent Nandroid backup of your phone (I used to do mine weekly, for just this reason), you may be best off doing something like this:

- from Titanium Backup Pro (get the pro version if you do not have it already - it's worth it.) Do menu->batch->backup all user apps
- If you need them, install SMS Backup & Restore and/or Call Logs Backup & Restore and back those up
- Restart in Recovery and Wipe data/factory reset, Wipe Dalvik Cache and re-flash xtrSENSE
- Set up from scratch again, though do not reinstall all apps. Reinstall Titanium Backup Pro and use menu->batch->restore all user apps. Do the same for SMS and Call Logs, if you need those.
- You'll probably also need to go through sound, display, WiFi, etc., settings to get everything set up as before, reset home screen icons, etc.

However, before that you could try uninstalling Lookout and see if that helps. Also, there is an app Cache Cleaner NG - try that, use it to wipe caches, and see if that helps. You can also use SMS Backup & Restore to delete all of your text messages (the app allows you to restore a limited number, if you need some for reference), and there is an app called Call Log Trimmer to delete call logs - that may help as well.

I'm not sure that either step will help, but I suppose it's better than doing the nuke and pave listed above.

I do have to say that, in my experience, the Sense build in 2.1 for the Eris, even rooted, eventually gets bogged down over time. Calls take several seconds to dial after engaging them, etc. Sometimes a simple phone restart helps, sometimes those things I listed two paragraphs above help, but sometimes you just need to restart from scratch.

Last thing that you can try (though I doubt it will help): Settings->applications->manage applications. Wait for it to refresh, looks for "Contacts Storage" (if there is no "Contacts Storage, try "Contacts"), tap it and tap the button "Wipe data". Do note that you will lose any phone contacts, plus any changes that you made since the last sync, but it may fix the sync issue. You may need to restart the phone if you are getting a force close, though.

(One last note - if having access to sms and mms messages historically is important to you, I use an app called SMS Backup+, which creates GMail conversations in a label called "SMS" for all received and sent messages. They can also be restored, but they are easy enough to see in GMail as well.)

Also, do think about restarting in Recovery every week or so to get a Nandroid backup, just in case, if you don't already do this.

Doogald, how many proposals of marriage have you received from this forum?

You helped me last time I had a similar problem. I tried all the suggestions you have above except the nuke and pave, but still have the force close message (after restart and another battery pull).

Last time, you also helped me with a restart in recovery mode and I had a hard time. You gave me a bunch of instructions about how to reflash xtrSENSE. Rather than have you go through that all over, I tried to search for my user name on the forum, but it just gets stuck in the search mode. Is there any other way to find that old thread? I can't remember how long ago it was... I believe it was a problem with syncing contacts before (rather than the universal problem I'm having now).

None so far. One chocolate cake offer, though.

It was here:

Let me know when everything is set back up again. Hopefully all will be well, and you can use the first few steps (the steps that bring you to "Nand backup") to make a Nandroid backup of your phone every once in a while. Then, if something like this happens again, you can

- shut down the phone
- hold VolUp while restarting to start Recovery
- Backup/Restore menu
- Nand restore
- press the trackball on the only thing that will be on the screen, which will be a code number that represents your phone, starting with "HTC"
- press the trackball on the most recent backup that you made and let the phone restore
- go back to the main menu (press VolDn)
- restart the phone

And your phone will be back to the way it was running *exactly* on the day that you ran that Nandroid backup.

FIXED!

Thanks for finding that thread! Until I re-read it, I completely forgot that it was a download problem. Boy, you really helped me out with that one. Have been using the cache cleaner since that time.

From now on, will retart in recovery every week so I remember how to do it.

One final question--are there any other ROMs you would recommend that may make the lag problem less noticeable? I really like my tiny little Eris and don't want to upgrade to one of those tablet-sized phones just yet. But the lag is getting quite annoying.

Waiting for that address where I can send the triple-decker chocolate cake (or any other flavor you choose).
