Activating smartphone on existing dumbphone line... data plan question

Fadelight

Android Expert
I currently have a 5-line Family shared plan that has 3 phones with Grandfathered unlimited data. I have been thinking for a while now about taking a smartphone that was left over from a previous upgrade and activating it on one of the lines that currently has a dumbphone.

The last time I poked around the VZ website, it would not give me the option of an unlimited data plan on that line, but I could buy one of the tiered data plans for it (which would be fine for this phone), but in looking today, I don't even have THAT option anymore.

I poked around the internet looking for an answer on how to get a data plan on that phone, and I see a lot of people who have activated phones with unlimited data even after VW switched to tiered data, so it leads me to the inevitable question...

If I call VZ rather than trying to use their website, what will the outcome be? Unlimited data, Tiered date, or a "Sorry, we cant do that" ?

Yeah, you are not going to get unlimited, no matter how hard you try, but tiered will be available for existing customers for a while yet.

I did this yesterday. My only choice was tiered data for that line. So now we have two smartphones with unlimited data and one smartphone with tiered data plus two dumb phones. The rep tried her best to sell the new family plan to me. I said, "Yeah, right! No thanks!"

I will be honest, I don't understand why they are selling the new data plan, it doesn't even start till June 28th right? Unless they are pre-queuing people to move to it...

This.
I read, in one of the many articles/pdf's/something, that it is starting on the 28th but can be backdated. Maybe they figure they can get more people to sign up that way...going back to the beginning of their cycle.
Edit: That way they can sign more people up, right now too.

Yeah that's it. I saw that too. Thanks.

So, after my GS3 gets here, will I be able to move the Droid X that I've been using on that line to my 2nd line that has a dumbphone on it? 2 GB for 30.00 actually sounds like a decent deal in this case, being that my wife will not use nearly as much data as I did with it.

Because its an existing line, I see absolutely no reason why you couldn't do this. You can do it yourself, or just call up Verizon customer service and they can walk you through it.
