Help Active application bar has vanished

Hi folks - new UK user of Samsung Galaxy S here. I wonder if you can help me. When I bought the phone on 7/12/10, on the homepage was a yellow/green active application bar that looked like a battery indicator but showed how many applications were active & let you terminate applications. A few days ago the bar just seemed to vanish - no idea why. Can anyone help me get it back please?

(Was v2.1, now Froyo v2.2 - upgrading went fine, but didn't bring the bar back)

Active application is gone in version 2.2.
Just press and hold home button to bring you to running applications.

I can use the Task Manager, although the previous widget was easy to use straight on the home page - But it vanished even before I upgraded?!
