Add A Notification Sound

I'm a little unclear as to the difference between a Ringtone sound and a Notification sound. I've just got a new S7 and I am missing one of my favorite notification sounds.
When I go to Settings>Sounds and Vibration>Notification Sounds>E-Mail Notifications, and I select my e-mail account and go to Notification sound, I get a standard list of sounds.
I have recently downloaded the sound I want and on the Ringtone list, there was an option to "Add" it. This option does not seem to apply to the Notification list.
How do I add to this list?

if you're comfortable moving files around, move that sound file to the "notifications" folder. if you don't have that folder, create one. works good for me.
