Add a solved option to the threads

I was actually referring to that Windows forum that someone posted above. However, in your situation, having looked at that forum, there is alot less break down in terms of subforums so again, it is much easier to implement.

Well they have over 40 forums but they also have fewer moderators, admins, and guides.

Imagine we utilize this; and for whatever reason a less-trafficed support subforum in a device forum has a thread with a support question that is eventually solved, but the OP doesn't change it. How long would it take for a moderator to take notice? We aren't able to check EVERY thread of EVERY support forum to make sure things are maintained correctly; it just isn't possible.
I'm not suggesting that this should be the primary or even a tertiary responsibility of the moderators. At the Ubuntu forums the moderators don't worry about this. The folks on the front lines, the ones that are helping everyone, the regular joes, will get on the people that they are helping to mark their own threads solved. Believe me there are plenty of threads that don't get marked that should. That doesn't make the option any less valuable when you're searching for help before you ask a question.

Well... users are now able to rename their threads. Perhaps users, in general, could try to get in the habit of marking them solved when their question is answered. :)

That would definitely help but having a one click option sure makes it easy and barely a thought. Once I realized that it was available at Ubuntuforums I went through all my threads and made use of it... and I always appreciate it when I do a search there.

Personally, I like the idea. I think it has it's advantages.

How often it would be used would be another story, of course.

I'm not the one you have to convince though, that would be the boss. There is so much going on behind the scenes I guess I could see why this one might not get immediate attention. Like the boss said though, keep the discussion going. :D

They have much fewer forums - and the discrepancy isn't even close. So again, it would make it extremely difficult, if not impossible. I can see where it can be helpful in certain forums but at this point, it doesn't seem feasible and/or advantageous.

The issue here is two things (in response to your 2nd paragraph): people's willingness to actually take the extra effort to mark things as read and people's responsibility to post in the correct forum to begin with. The former obviously can't be judged since nothing of this sort has been implemented so thats a moot point. Unfortunately, the latter is something that has not yet been accomplished. With Ubuntu, as I said, you have large main forums. On AF, you have large main forums broken down into smaller subforums, which even then could be broken down again. I could see that solved option work if we had that same structure of a small amount of main forums, which would force users to post in that particular area.

But in the end, as Kelmar said, we are not the ones to persuade; and it at this ponit, the decision's made so its a moot point nonetheless. I'm just trying to give you the other side of the story - as I can see where Rob/Phases/etc are coming from and agree with them.

I'm on linuxforums.org and I like the solved option as well.:) What about a FAQ section in the all things root forums? I live in the Eris section and I know a lot of the same questions are asked and some of those fellas go into great detail when they explain answers. I don't know what would be envolved in doing that but just saying.:)

ps- dummie me i just noticed the faq but i was thinking more sepcific to the sections but then i might not know what the hell i'm talking about.

Well again... there are a lot of forums here but there are also a lot more moderators, admin, and guides. The real work is done by the regulars there and here. So I don't believe that this is a logical con against this suggestion.

I'm not suggesting that this should be more work for the moderators. As far as I know the staff at the ubuntu forums don't mark threads solved. The users do. If anything it's more work for the coders, initially, but I imagine the bulletin board software company already has a template for this.

Why worry about how it will be used? If it is used it would be an asset to everyone the users, admin, mods and guides. If it isn't then let it be. What is the risk vs reward? What is the initial investment in such a system where the payoff could be great.

Every forum that I know of where it has been implemented is an example of success and a proven asset. I can't find any forums where it has been a failure.

I don't know much about forums management but is implementing this idea really that difficult? I mean ubuntu is vbulletin same as here.

In the long run, and short run for that matter, it should make less work for the staff.

If "will it get used" is really a concern, I know, in the sections I frequent, you wouldn't have any trouble finding reputable members/ volunteers willing to take on the responsibilty of marking threads "solved" if given the limited authority to do so. After all they're the ones that are answering the same questions over and over and over again on a daily basis.

I have an example of my question:
what is all this "rooting" and "froyo" talk?
I beleive that question has been asked more than once and has been answered more than once. I think a sticky should be made for this to save from repeated answering such as this example Eris All things ROOT THREAD: Apps and ROMS Updated Post #2.
