Help Adding a contact on Eris and having it sync

When I got my Eris - Verizon linked it with my google account. All of my contacts came over just fine. However when I add a new contact in the phone - it does not sync over to google. I looked through the manuel and according to it, when you add a contact there is a drop down menu to choose type of contact (phone, google, exchange). However my drop down only has phone as an option. Anyone else have this problem or know how to fix?​
