Adding/Editing Contact from Text

This seems like it should be straight forward and intuitive but I can't get this to work.

I have a contact listed from my Facebook account and who is also in my Gmail contact list. I joined the contacts on my phone. I don't have a telephone number added to the contact as of yet. She texted me and I now want to associate her telephone number to the contact in my list. Can't do it!

I go into the text, touch and hold on the message, it brings up the menu "Add to Contacts". Then the Contacts field comes up, I select the contact and it doesn't add the tele number.

How do I accomplish this??

Update - what I discovered was that after "joining" the contact from Facebook and GMail via my phone, I could not add the phone number. However, when I split the contact I could add the phone number to the Gmail contact and then rejoin the Gmail and Facebook contact information again.

I hope there is an easier way to do this.
