Help Adding Notification Sounds to the Optimus V

How do you add a notification sound to the list after you download them from something like Zedge? I got a new sound downloaded for Weatherbug but it doesn't show in the list of available Android sounds.

What menus come up when you go to assign the sound? If you have the Zedge app there should be a Zedge menu and it'll be in there, otherwise it's probably in your music (I have no idea why).

The default android sound menu comes up (caffeine snake, captain's log, etc...)

Try adding a directory on the SD card (must be in root directory) named "Notifications". OS should see this and read any files inside.
Same goes for Ringtones.

Let me know if this works.

That seems to have worked! I was able to select the weather alert i downloaded for my Weatherbug notification sound now.

Ringtones seem to work ok without a new folder...I have a choice to select Zedge ringtones. I just didn't have that choice for notifications.

ETA...must be a Weatherbug thing because my other apps allow me to choose Android or Zedge for sounds.

"Skratte" Thanks a lot for the info,It worked great for me for awhile I tried to figure this one out but couldn't....THANKS.

Glad you got that worked out, but I gotta say, it's truly odd that I haven't done anything with directories on my card and this what I see when I go to set any kind of sound anywhere:

Now, why music has the handcent icon is a mystery, but every sound file on my phone that's not from zedge is in there (and they're not all in the same folder on my card; hell, they're not even in the music folder). It's hard to see, but that shot is from the settings in one of my gmail accts, and I could set a five min song as the notification if I wanted to. Color me confused.

I get that too...but not when I try to set a notification sound for weatherbug. It's the only app I have that won't show that selection screen. So I think my problem was weatherbug related.

Found this while looking for something else, thought it might help with any other questions on android folder structure.

Nice guys, that totally works!

  1. Simply plug your phone into your computer
  2. Turn on USB Mass Storage
  3. Browse to your memory card through My Computer
  4. In the Root of your SD Memory card create a folder labled "Notifications"
  5. Copy any or your music and/or audio files (that the Optimus is compatible with) into that folder
  6. Remove the phone from the computer
  7. Go to Messaging / Settings / Ringtone
  8. You should see your audio files in the list now

And to make all those folders easier to find you can put them all in /sdcard/media.

I hate messy looking folders.. OCD I think! :p

I have mine like this:

/sdcard/Media/notifications
/sdcard/Media/ringtones
/sdcard/Media/alarms

I normally download all of my ringtones, alarms, notifications, wallpapers etc. directly to my hard drive (so I have a copy of everything in case I need to factory reset my phone) on the PC and then move them over to the SD card.

I love it when people pull up threads proving what a dumbass I was. OK, I'm still a dumbass, but I have my stuff in folders now, lol.

I put my ringers into the phone : /system/media/audio and renamed them to .ogg
this keeps them from being played when I plug into a car usb player in the mp3 player or appearing in multiple locations. I am of course rooted with busy box using esfile explorer

Handcent is there because it has a ringtone/notification manager too. It's optional but it exists.

I think this is directed at me, because I'm the only one who mentioned it in this thread...Yeah, I realize that now- I had set the Handcent ringtone picker, but like I said, I was still quite clueless back in March when I posted all that.
