Adding widgets/apps to default lock screen

Good morning all and Happy Easter. I have a Galaxy Nexus with version 4.2.2 and a Nexus 7 tablet, also with 4.2.2.

I was using Widget Locker because it allowed me to add widgets to the lock screen. I was told (by someone) or heard (somewhere) that that was also possible on the default lock screen, and to just press the plus (+) to add.

I can do that on the tablet (the plus character is there, but I just noticed, not always) but it is not there on the phone. I know that there are differences between the phone and the tablet, but is it not possible to add widgets to the lock screen on the phone? The key, is guess is the plus button which doesn't show on the phone.

I would prefer using the default lock screen if possible.

Suggestions and recommendations are welcome.
