Adjust Keyboard Repeat Delay and Touch Screen Context Activation?

Lurker
I have done my due diligence and have been searching for hours on how to adjust these parameters and am coming up empty handed, so if this information is already published, feel free to flame, but please point me to it!!

My girlfriend has an Epic 4G and a coordination disability that, basically, makes it hard for her to quickly tap the touch screen or briefly press keys on the keyboard. She holds them too long, so rather than activating an icon on the home screen, she ends up moving it. And when using the keyboard, she gets repeated letters. On my old HTC Hero, which I had rooted and installed various ROMs on at one point in a hopeless endeavor for improved performance, I recall seeing menus that allowed one to adjust these parameters. She would prefer not to root, but whatever.. if it's the only way, I'll twist her arm. She can't really use her phone at this point! Still, if there's a non-rooting way, I am anxious to hear it. If not, which ROM provides these options?

I have searched high and low for accessibility features, but the only accessibility options seem to be for screen readers and voice input, which are useless for her since her disability affects her voice as well (and her vision is fine). This is driving both of us up a wall since the Sprint sales guy told us he was "sure" we could adjust this setting. We'd prefer not to return it, largely because there doesn't appear to be anything better out there either! If there is, we'd be forever in your debt for some info.

Thanks in advance!

Does she really need this phone? And I've never seen those features anywhere on this phone. Rooted or unrooted.

Does anybody really need this phone? No. Should she have equal access to technology? Yes.

Pardon some ignorance from the forums. That comment aside I have posted this issue also in a couple other forums and we shall hope to see some response to this! I think this is great that your looking into it and trying to help your GF. I also feel the same way. Does anyone really need this phone? Its not a matter of needing...its a matter of wanting it and like you said having equal access to it.

Zigg, thank you so much for your understanding and assistance in getting the word out. I appreciate the support. A big thank you from the disability community. And the same to anybody who can help with this issue.

I don't know what a home launcher is, but I'll look into it. Any suggestions on one that may have this functionality?

i know with swift keyboard you adjust the time for the keyboard but that only helps if she is using the virtual keyboard. i will keep an eye open for this on the other forums as well. and i totally agree she should have equal access.

home launcher app will go on top of stock touchwiz and vanilla android. unfortunately, i'm using touchwiz and have also only used vanilla android launcher. but, what i'm thinking with the 3rd-party launcher app is that it might have additional settings, such as the lagging or delay of touch calibration. some familiar 3rd party app home launcher: ADW, LaucherPro, Go Launcher EX, etc.

agree with suggestion to look into 3rd party virtual keyboard app, too, like thumb keyboard, better keyboard, smart keyboard, wifi keyboard, etc.

This thread is quite old now, and the original poster may have found an answer.
I have a Galaxy Note, and I can set the Tap and Hold Delay to Medium or Long instead of Short.

To find that, I tapped the Menu button, then Settings.
I scrolled to Accessibility and found Tap and Hold Delay and set it to Long.

As #9 Jim has mentioned, Settings ->Accessibility -> Timing Controls -> Touch & Hold Delay , there is 3 options to choose from (Short, Medium, Long) shall help solve the problem. If not, please let us know!

- Re: "Touch & Hold Delay" ... - I've checked that, and I don't think that's the same thing/setting for Key Repeat Delay... (I have separate settings for each on my Galaxy s10 with Android 12, plus the delays offered don't seem right/applicable to "key bounces"... in my phone, it's called "Bounce Keys", ...) .
..
(This is a NEW question in my other forum, android stack exchange, btw...)
..
A general Search in Settings for "physical keyboard", "external keyboard", or just "keyboard" SHOULD get you there, or perhaps direct browsing thru all Accessibility settings (as in my phone), or another Hardware Settings/Phone Customization app (quickly found one in Google Play, but it wasn't free, around $3).
