Root Advantages of using a custom ROM?

I am considering re-rooting ( did it in the past for a screenshot app), and installing a custom ROM, but I'm wondering.. what are the real advantages? My stock Inc2 doesn't feel slow at all, and I basically don't notice the bloatware. Would I get better battery life? Any key features found in GingerBangSense or MikRunny that I'm missing out on? I can only think of tethering off the bat.

I like AdFree but you don't need a custom ROM for that, just root. The ROMs add things like more Quick Settings and Tweaks like centering and coloring the clock. And of course you can play with ICS.

Well, ROMs, in my opinion, make the phone more of your phone.
You can use ROMs that represent you and what you like.
They can make your phone snappier if they're debloated.
Kernels also help with battery life.
