Adventures in USB OTG; what are you using it for?

Has anyone found an app or method to use the USB for audio. I used an audio tester utility and it is clearly seeing my headset microphone. But, when using a standard recording app - it defaults to the built in microphone. Clearly, a USB audio in would be a boon for recording from a mixing board etc.

Any suggestions?? Ideas??

I am using a rooted Nexus 7 - I can read/write any external drive, up to my 2TB NTFS drive but - digital music input would be nice . . .

I got a usb 4 port hub, and was able to plug a usb mouse and keyboard via usb OTG, and it worked great.
Now I am rooted, and can use stickmount to mount my old ipod, and can use that as a portable harddrive in addition to microSD+usb adapter.
I tried mounting my andriod smartphone but couldn't access any files

Ok, so i bought the afterglow ap.2 wireless ps3 controller to use with my nexus 7 that i am getting next week. I did not see when i bought it that it comes with an adapter. I tried using my otg chord to plug it in to my motion to test it. But it didnt work. My otg wont work with anything either. I just wanna know if thus controller will work with the adapter on my nexus 7. Anybody got any ideas?

I bought my OTG usb adapter before the nexus 7 arrived, and I tested it on my phone and got no response, not even a light for power when I plugged in my SD carder reader, so I was thinking I bought a shoddy cord. I waited until my nexus 7 arrived, and tried the OTG cable and its worked perfectly fine. My phone doesn't have compatibility with OTG I guess.
I would say wait until you get your nexus 7, or try testing it on a device that is known to work with USB OTG, I believe most samsung higher end devices support OTG.

I prefer not to root. Question is does the mini USB OTG have any use in a stock N7? What functions besides charging and file transfer are available with the USB connection? Thanks.

You don't need to root. Just get Nexus Media Importer and you can plug in any usb drive. I've got a tiny 32GB flash drive onto which I copied most of my music, movies etc. And if you are into watching movies, install DVD Catalyst on your pc, not only it will convert them for viewing them on the Nexus, it will compress them as well, with no appreciable loss of quality. You'll also need a media player. BS Player is free with good functionality.

Now what do I do with the damn thing...

If you are rooted you can use stick mount to plug memory sticks in, which is nice. Even though I have a 32gb N7 I keep most of my movies on a 64gb stick.

If you use a dslr you can control it with Helicon remote, which is way cool.

Also, you can transfer and view photos from many digital cameras with the use cable.

Or just brag about having the capability without ever using it. ;)

Sorry to hijack this thread. I have tried watching a film from my USB drive. It is very jerky. Can this be down to the speed of the drive? If so can anyone suggest a base line read/write speed?

If it plays fine on pc it should be no problem on the N7 either. Try testing that or playing some other files to see if there's a difference. If you experience any other problems reading from the drive (or writing to it if you're rooted) and that isn't the case on your pc, it might be your otg cable. If you're using a hdd without external power there might be a very small chance its not getting enough power, but in my experience that shouldn't be a problem at all and if it is, might still be due to your cable.

Good evening,

I am also using my otg cable to use my six axis controller for games however what I would like to know is whether or not anyone has found a cable that allows you to charge the tablet while using the controller?

Thanks Rich.

So, I got my Nexus 7 Saturday. Installed ES File Explorer and somewhere I had all these folders listed USB 1.1, USB 1.1.1, USB 1.1.2, etc. (I think they were under /mnt/ or /sdcard/). Found the flash drive eventually.

Now today I tried it with the same flash drive and nothing, cannot find a thing. Anyway, installed Nexus Media Importer and at least I can find my music and movies now...just seems weird.

If that was true, using adb would mean you couldn't charge it

With a regular usb cable you can always charge at usb speeds, although I'd hardly call that charging when it still drains the battery with screen on and cpu at half speed.
But charging with an otg cable is a no-go I'm afraid.

I charge at full speeds:cool:

Its a kernel feature I added on my one v as well, which allows a user to override the USB charge and make the device charge at full power. Just got to remember USB 3.0 is probably one of the only things that has enough power. But I have USB 3.0 :)

Yeah I know its a bit of a long shot but I was hoping to use my Padfone as a BYOD device. Whilst I can VPN into the corporate network, I would rather use it with a LAN cable when I'm in the office and it is on my desk. (Using a Motorola Bluetooth mouse and HP touchpad BT keyboard and part of an ipad 1 stand, which actually works well!)

I also have a Nexus 7 so was wondering the same for that, hence posting here.

I have a Wireless Mini Air Mouse & Keyboard that I bought from 7dayshop which works perfectly with the USB OTG cable (also bought from 7dayshop). Not only can I use the keyboard on the Nexus 7, I can also use the mouse, which surprised me.

I am using

THIS OTG adapter and THIS Serial<>USB adapter and THIS Serial USB App which works fine, even (almost perfectly) on an old SunFire
