Help advice for my thunderbolt?

I have had by tbolt for over a year and a half now, I bought it used already rooted and it has had android 2.3.4 on it with htc sense 2.1. I now own a new unrooted sgs3 that I mainly use and the tbolt is just a spare. Now the tbolt works just fine but obviously the software is outdated. I prefer to keep it rooted but know NOTHING about rooting myself. I can jailbreak an ios device but of course that's much easier

should I try to update any of the software on the device or just leave it as is? I wouldn't mind getting ICS on it because GB is getting boring. Just not sure what to do with it?

Thanks

Check out the Root/Unroot thread for info on how to root your phone. Read everything multiple times before you start.

There's a rooted, de-bloated version of ICS available at InfectedRom.com (registration required). I believe at least one dev here (JRocker) was working on one as well but don't know the status. There aren't any "custom" ROMs yet. Not sure if there will be either (like those from Team BAMF, etc).

If you grab the one from InfectedRom.com, make sure you get the 376.8MB file. I think the MCC_OTA and com.SmithMicro.DM components are still active in that ROM however. A week or so after I installed it I got a funky message on my lock screen about my phone having to be activated. I assume it was an attempted OTA push (can't think of what else it could've been) so freeze those in Titanium Backup if you have it.

If not, I don't know what other apps (free or otherwise) will freeze programs..

Edit: Don't forget to get the updated radios from the page at InfectedRom too, in case that's not obvious. :D

I have a SG3 on JB and a thunderbolt on ICS as my backup as well. I recommend getting it to at least ICS if possible as it does make it easier have two similar OSs on the two phones. ICS was released for this phone over the air so maybe just unroot it and let it install the normal OS and you should be good to go.

havent posted in this thread for a while. going to keep the tbolt as it's my only extremely reliable tethering device. I basically use it as a modem for home internet haha

Digging up this thread. I have a Thunderbolt that my son uses as just a mp3 player. I plan on installing that ICS ROM for him. I'm wondering though, we don't use Verizon, so this'll never be re-activated as a real phone; do I still need to update the radios, or can I just install the ROM with out doing that step? I understand it won't hurt to do so, but just curious. Thanks.
