Root Advice on Kernel & ROM?

My Needs (in order of importance)

Wi-Fi Hotspot enabling
Ability to uninstall (or absence of) crapware
Functions like Camera / Voice / GPS / Google Play Store working properly
Stability
Speed
4.0.3 or Higher

My current system:
HTC Rezound
S-off (JuopunutBear Vigor)
Recovery - TWRP v2.5.0.0
[Kernel] [PrimoU] 2013/05/21 HELLBOY
Rom - AOKP-Neo1.8 Linaro
Android 4.0.4

The problem I'm having now is that the default camera is all weird - it's sideways and no matter how you rotate it's screwed up.

Also phone calls have a weird tin-can sound, and tapping on the case during a call makes it sound like you're beating on the can. Maybe it's not software causing this - perhaps a short from frequently taking the case off?

In recovery, I get "Unable to mount '/emmc' and and "Unable to mount internal storage." errors. Also in when booted up it tells me the SD card is blank, but I can play music and browse files there, so I dunno.

I had no idea about this rooting stuff until yesterday, but I think I might be happy with stock or a close to stock rom with the ability to do what I said above.

Many thanks to anyone offering advice!

If it's not clear, is there a way to improve on my question? If this isn't a good place to ask, can anyone suggest a proper forum for this question? Thanks again!

hi brockalee, this is a fine place for such discussion, and your questions have been asked just fine. unfortunately, alot of rezound folks have moved on to other devices,so the traffic here is minimal these days, and those that are here may just not know the answers to your questions.

if you have recently s-offed,what you may want to do prior to anything else is run an ruu,or install the newest firmware package, then do a "factory reset" or "clear storage" from hboot, with the stock recovery in place. the s-off process seems to confuse the phone somewhat, yielding wonky data, and possibly contributing to your other issues.

newest ruu is here: Shipped ROMs

newest firmwars is here: firmware_4.05.605.14.zip

that is a stock, signed firmware package,so it will change your hboot and boot image as well. if you want to keep jpbear hboot and the boot image for your current rom,you can unzip the package, and delete the hboot and boot images, then rezip. leave the stock recovery in place, its needed to "clean" the phone.

the basic steps will be:
-make a backup of what youre running
-run ruu or flash firmware package
-factory reset or clear storage in hboot
-re-install recovery(twrp or amon)
-restore backup, flash new rom(or flash superuser if you ran ruu and want to stay stock)

moving on to your other questions,i dont have much experience with the various available roms,i tend to run stock,or unmolested CM when its available. i play with and provide support for alot of different devices,so i tend to not be a flashoholic like when i first got into all this

my rezound for the moment is still my daily driver. ive been running wild stangs unofficial CM 10.1 since BT started working. granted,i talk on a BT,not directly on the handset, but none of your call quality or camera issues exist for me.

i dont have much use for tether,so i dont know about that. may want to search his rom thread for answers to that,if youd like to try out that rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2113140 i just run the kernel it comes with.

i dont have any of your recovery issues either, may want to try switching to amon recovery and see if the prollem still exists. if so try and reformat the card in the PC with a cardreader(full format to FAT32) and see if that helps. you may also need to format the sd from the booted phone, and then from within recovery, in order to get recovery to see it again.

hope that helps :)

Thanks so, so, so much for replying. I've done some "work" since I posted last.

I'm currently running Funky Kernel 3.4 with OTA-Global-Stock-4.05.605.14 710RD-Rooted ROM, but it just resetswhen I see the... desktop I guess you call it? And continues on that loop.

I'll try the firmware you provided me, as the version matches the ROM I'm trying to run so maybe that's something! I removed the boot.img and hboot though - we'll see if that works!

Should I be worried about my kernel at this point?

The problem mounting the SD mmc whatever seemed to be related to using TWRP. I'm on Amon now and it finds the SD fine, but when trying to update the firmware I get:

Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Installing update...
E: Can't find update script
Installation aborted.

I've tried both the zips - the original downloaded, and the one I took the boot.img and

Grrr...

But now, after doing a factory reset, it's actually booting. She falls in a well, eyes go crossed. She gets kicked by a mule, they go back to normal. I don't know.

EclipticRez seems to be a very popular ROM that I have been enjoying over the past 6 months or so. It provides all of the features that you mentioned, and is in active development. Look for it on the MikMik site.

This has taken up an incredible amount of time time I didn't really have (getting ready to move, have a 1.5 yr and 3 mo old, and constantly working). I'd love to check it out when I get the time. It's disappointing that the Rezound isn't getting much attention. From what I've read, it's a difficult device. I gathered that's a common theme among HTC devices...

I'm grandfathered into an unlimited plan through Verizon, and they're the only 4G service available in the rural area I'm moving to. While I'm still planning on getting a hotspot device with 20GB plan when I move there (which will cost me $100/mo) I'm relying on this phone to give me and my family access to things like netflix and youtube that would otherwise put us over the cap.

Thanks guys for your help in this - it means a lot to me and my family. :)
