After Insertion of a microSDHC Card

I bought a completely new Sandisk 16GB microSDHC Card and have what looks like have successfully inserted it onto my Samsung Galaxy Ace II.

It showed up as 14.83GB, a question I want to ask, is this all I was required to do by inserting it? like no formatting needed or anything? like I say it shows up with total space 14.83GB.

Or do I need to re-start the phone or anything for it to create any such related directories for it?

Just to say that I do see a directory which I believe to be related to it named external_sdcard.

EDIT...

I see this here but wondered what you folks thought?

Do I have to format a new micro sd card? | Mobot.net

The size discrepancy always shows like that once formatted. I think you'll find, if you view the card by plugging the phone into a PC (with USB drivers for the phone) that it'll show up as having a directory structure. I think that's one of the things the phone checks for (and creates if necessary) when it boots with the message 'preparing SD card'.

I have just inserted a new 16GB microexternal SD card into my Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 phone on JellyBean 4.1.2

My question is that when I look in MY FILES ----> ALL FILES folder I see 2 folders, the folder shown at the top says extSdCard and the folder below says sdcard0, the latter being the original built in card, but my issue or question here is there is also a folder named external_sd and that resides when I look in the sdcard0 folder, location being storage/sdcard0/external_sd, so what is that one used for when there is a separate folder for the external SD card that was made like I have mentioned above?

Should I be deleting the folder that says external_sd that sits in the sdcard0 folder? or do I move the folder that was made when I inserted the card onto the storage/sdcard0/external_sd, so it would ultimately look like this storage/sdcard0/external_sd/extSdCard

EDIT.

Well after speaking to support it seems that with this firmware upgrade to JellyBean on this particular phone it is not possible to move apps to the External SD card or change the home storage location, well unless you root or use some sort of application which I am not prepared to do, with the exception of documents and music and files etc.
