Air gesture screen

I am Using a stock unrooted S4 AT&T w/4.2, with the phone flat on the counter face up I swipe my hand over the sensor and it display the time, calls, emails and text. The problem is that it always shows 0 even though I have unread emails and text, I am using the stock messaging app as well as the stock email not the gmail app.
