Hey there and welcome to Android forums!

After having your device reset, have you signed back into your Google account?

If your contacts was synced to your Google account, they should automatically sync back to your device.

Seeing as how they wasn't backed up to your SD card or Google account, I don't think you have anything to lose by trying.

That's one thing about MetroPCS I like as a carrier. Their Metro Total Backup. It's $1 extra a month, and you install a very low in resources app, and you can set it to sync your contacts to the Metro server every night at a certain time, or every week, etc. I mean, now they have so many other ways to backup contacts but for someone like me on MetroPCS, who stores their contacts on their phone, and not on the SIM, and not with Google, the Metro Backup service is 100% worth every penny. I never had a issue getting my contacts if I had to reset, or I got a new phone. I install the app, enter my number, confirm the answer to my secret question, and enter my pin to the app, and boom. I log in, sync then to the phone, and all done.
