And I just wanted to say, "Thank You Motorola for making such an awesome first venture into Android and for pulling me in along with you."

Even if the BIONIC has a locked bootloader, if it wasn't for the DROID I'd never have gotten into Android in the first place.
 
Love my Droid! I love the Droid Razr, just played with it in the store. I do, however want the Galaxy Nexus! Will it be too ancient to be excited about in 5 months when my upgrade is available? I bet Ice Cream Sandwich will be ancient by then! Is there any other phone on the horizon that is 100% Android like that though?
 
ICS will most definitely not be ancient in 5 months. It has yet to come out.

As fro a phone being ancient - well, let me say that high end phones don't become obsolete as quickly as middle-grade and low endphones do.

On average:

High end phones take about 6 months to 1 year for obsoletion to occur.

Middle grade phones tend to get hit as early as 2 months.

Low end phones (you know, those that the wireless companies give you for free when you upgrade / update your contract) are, for the most part, already obsolete.

However, obsolete is a very relative (and subjective) term here....
 
Is there any way to tell if the OG Droid was "high end" or anything since it was Verizon's first Android? Also, is it safe to say, the Incredible, X, Bionic, and Razr are/were all high end when they came/come out?
 
Comparatively speaking, yes.

Smartphones are always categorized as high end phones.

Middle grade (to me) are phones who've been out for over a year (my advisor at school was tickled pink when he got his Incredible from VZW - this past July. Seriously.) Middle grade to the carriers are the phones that are like my old Samsung Alias - it could do a lot like VZW music, etc, so were more than low end basic phones but were still below the category of smartphones.

The low end are, of course, the phones that just make calls and send SMS.

IIRC, I think the carriers use other terms, like smart phones, feature phones, and basic phones, but the idea is the same.
 
Well my OG Droid is not quite 2 years old (at least to me) but it's still going strong, actually cranking out some AC/DC on my desk at the moment. Having a small issue with GPS not always coming up and my Bluetooth suddenly dropping, but that could probably be cured with me figuring out how to open up more resourses. Whenever I flash a new ROM it's stupid fast, but after all my apps load I start getting the bogging and redraw issues we are used to. All in all still the bar that I hold all new phones to, and that's a pretty high bar, as yet I haven't found a phone that I would drop my Droid for. Simply comeing from a combination of hardware, customizability, and OPENNESS.

By the By John, I still want your avatar for my boot.:D
 
As much as it kills me seeing people with dual core, 4G, huge screens, etc on their phones, I should count myself fortunate that the phone I'm stuck with until April is the OG Droid! Sure, I'm a bit too lazy to become educated enough and learn how to root and rom, but still, it's solid and reliable, legendary!

Does anyone know if anything else besides the Galaxy Nexus that is PURE android and NO UI is coming out late this year or early next? Is this now the Prime?

Does anyone know where to go for looking ahead at what's coming up, besides here, Engadget, Android Authority, and just Google?

Also, besides the Droid 4, is anything on the horizon that is Dual Core, 4G, and have a physical keyboard?

Anyhow thanks so much for your help. Enjoying my Droid in the meantime!
 
Also, for a non-rooting kind of person like me, what would I be losing/gaining if I had sense, blur, etc to deal with by getting a regular android phone, that is different than my Droid? Would I even notice going from my OG Droid, to a Bionic, Razr, etc, besides gingerbread?
 
Still rocking my Droid. I got it in December '09 though, so it specifically is not quite 2 yet. Throughout my time with it, I haven't found a phone yet worthy of replacing it (on Verizon anyways). I thank the dev community for that because they're constantly breathing new life into this phone and giving its updates/features that new phones coming out now have. It's amazing what an unlocked bootloader can do for a phones longevity and it's the reason why none of Moto's phones since then have replaced it.

The Galaxy Nexus seems to be the only phone fitting to take its place now. I expect to pick it up later this month :D. I will prolly still keep the Droid around as a dedicated WiFi/GPS device to use though :).

Vanilla Android = Galaxy Nexus.

As for where to look, here would be a good place, AndroidCentral, and of course, BGR - they seem to get well over 80% of all leaked info before anyone else.

Physical KB - that would be the only one, in terms of a real KB, although there might be other phones that hav mini KBs like the Droid Pro

I'll say this - I haven't used the other UIs at all, but the latest BLUR is a far cry from the cheap, clunky and extremely slow ancestors. This BLUR not only looks good, but feels good.

however, there are already 'de-BLURred' ROMs out there and folks are claiming a noticeable (remember that is a very subjective term) improvement in performance.

Yah, it is. I'm debating if I should get it on a second upgrade line or not....
 
My OG Droid turns two about the first of the year. It still serves my needs except that it now has a flaky clip or circuit that will lock up for minutes at a time at crucial times on me. Thus I will be upgrading sometime in the next month. Even though some flashier options might be out there the Bionic looks like the best option for me. I quess I've made my transition to Android after about ten years on palm OS (pre-phone). Now I'm waiting for a good ipad like android table to supplement my phone.
 
TBH, if you like the DROID, and can wait, go for the Galaxy Nexus. It will be as close to stock as the DROID is but with beefed up hardware.

And you'll love Ice Cream Sandwich (aka Android 4.0). Trust me.

And don't get me wrong- I love my BIONIC - if I could get an unlocked bootloader on it I would pick it over the Galaxy Nexus every day. It has just about everything I could want - and the cheap ($25) for the Motorola extended batteries are awesome - I get 15-18 hours on heavy use and up to 36 hours on light use (seriously - 36 hours on a single charge).

But, since the bootloader is locked it is going to be hard to get a ROM based on the AOSP release of ICS - which means I have to wait until Motorola sends the official ICS update down the pipelines - and that might be 6 months or more....
 
This poll says wonders. Right now, a whopping 91.3% say this device was our first Android device.

I'm not sure about the other 20 people, but I ma never going to veer to iOS, Symbian, Palm, Blackberry, or WP7 - or even later.

I'm here to stay with this device and this OS.
 
OK, saying device might be too much - or is it?

I'm about to flash my DROID to stock and see if an update is available so I can test rooting it or not - fun times :P
 
Probably middle on next year. I'm being that phones that are on gb now well get ics, but in stores they well probably not update them before the sale.
 
So by mid April, when it's finally upgrade time, don't you think they will have ICS on board by then?

Also, I don't know where to post this quick phone buying question, but when I do upgrade, how do I know where to buy?

How can I be sure I don't get something for a couple hundred bucks and then see it on Amazon for a penny the next day?

I have a friend who got a Rezound for a penny, even though he didn't get a NEW line.

As fro where to get a phone - I bought my BIONIC from CostCo the day it debuted. I paid $20 less than VZW's retail price and also received an accessory bundle worth $160 for free.

Best bet - buy it from a site that offers price guarantees for a certain period (14 / 30 days) if possible. Otherwise, seriously look at CostCo as an alternative - the bundled accessories usually more than make up for a significant price drop even 30 days later.
 
Sounds like a good idea! I am hoping stuff comes out I will like. I know ANYTHING is a HUGE upgrade for me, but I think that if I can't get stock Android, I'll probably go sense.
 
Oh I know that. I am looking forward to test driving that. I just don't want to get something 4-5 months old again at upgrade if possible. I assume ICS won't be too old in April, but I don't want to be stuck on something that ends up being the first of many in the same time frame.

We all just hope the GNEX doesn't get delayed as long as the Bionic!
