Allshare replacement?

I got my Galaxy Note for one week now, and having a blast with it.
My first Android device is Archos 70it, and while I love its multimedia playing capability, I feel that the device is not practical enough in day to day use. I can put it in my jacket pocket, but not in shirt pocket. It's also behind in hardware and software.

Archos G9 tablets, unfortunately, don't interest me with their 512 MB RAM and problematic screen.

Galaxy Note gives me the right size for my pocket and my eyes. It's adequate for video and ebook reading. Not bad for gaming too. And it fits in my shirt pocket (just so). The stylus is a big plus too for note takings.

But it lacks something that I truly love from my Archos 70it: it has native ability to browse files from PCs connected to the same WIFI networks. It can also play avi files out of the box.

The avi playing problem can be solved by using MX Video player but so far I am still looking for the network file explorer that "just works" like the Archos native ability. They either needs root, need Samba, or both.

I tried using Allshare, but allshare can't play avis, and it lists ALL of the videos at once, not per folder.

So I am still looking for the perfect app for this. Any help? Thanks.

Well, I tried to install Allshare on my PC and managed to access all of my PC shared folders from my Note, but now I got: "Can not play, signal too weak" error.
